WerFault failure and BSOD

Hi.

I'm in need of a little bit of advice.

For the past several days I have been experiencing multiple app failures / freezes. It started a few days after installing September's
Windows Updates. The most common app failure seems to be WerFault.exe. This has failed several times and caused a couple of
BSODS's.

mbam.exe, msfeedsync.exe and firefox.exe have failed as well.

In each instance the faulting module is KERNELBASE.dll.

I'm not sure as to the cause of all this. Malware or possibly something to do with Windows Update ?

I had trouble with the faulty updates Microsoft issued in August's updates as well (caused live kernel events relating to ATI graphics).
Those problems went away after I unistalled the affected updates.

Should I try a system restore point ?

Hi:

BSOD are usually caused by hardware problems, driver issues or some types of malware (rootkits).

It might help to start to sort this out if you could please provide the following:

  • Read this pinned topic and post back with ATTACHMENTS of the requested logs: Diagnostic Logs
    • If you have run FRST on this computer previously, please place a check-mark in "Addition.txt" before you run it
  • The "stop codes" from the BSOD, if you have them
  • The Windows mini-dumps (zipped and attached) from the date/time corresponding to the BSOD

Then we will need to wait for one of the more knowledgeable forum members/staff to review the information. :)

Thanks,

Hi:

Sorry, we'll need to wait for someone familiar with 8.1, but perhaps this will help:

http://www.eightforums.com/bsod-crashes-debugging/10685-blue-screen-death-bsod-posting-instructions.html

Did you run mbam-check for that log, as well?

(The experts will likely need additional logs from other tools that probe the hardware setup in more detail....)

OTOH, if you think you might be infected, it might be more efficient just to head over to the malware removal section.

If you do, please read this first: Available Assistance for Possibly Infected Computers

Then please start a NEW topic there, including the same diagnostic logs.

One of the experts will assist you with looking into your issue.

Thanks,

Sorry. Forgot about the other log.

I wasn't sure about going to the malware removal forums because I have doubts as to whether it is malware related or not.

It could just as easily be related to all the Windows Update problems of late.

August's batch of updates definitely messed with my graphics card (as it did with other people).

I had to uninstall the bad updates and reset ATI back to factory defaults.

Things went quiet again for a few weeks and then my problems started again after installing September's updates last week.

It would be helpful to rule out malware though.
