question about dllhost.exe malware.......

Recommended Posts

Despite having both Norton Internet Security and the free version of Malwarebytes, I got hit with the Poweliks malware from visiting Photobucket.com, causing my system to run slower from high CPU by 30 instances of the COM Surrogate "dllhost.exe*32" process. I rebooted in Safe Mode and ran a threat scan with Malwarebytes, finding nothing. While still in Safe Mode, I ran a full system scan with Norton, finding and deleting "Trojan.Viknok.B!inf".

After that, my computer is running fast again with no more dllhost.exe*32 processes, however, one thing I notice is that when I click to view ALL processes, I see that 1 (sometimes 2) COM Surrogate dllhost.exe SYSTEM process(es) disappear from task manager after about 5 seconds. I've tried to quickly click "Open File Location" or "Properties" for the process(es) to see the location (as I've found that instances in the System32 folder are safe), but it won't let me open that information about it (probably because they are SYSTEM processes).

I have seen the dllhost.exe process even before that infection, but I'm just curious.......did I FULLY delete the malware?

I would prefer NOT to download any additional antivirus/antimalware programs...

Thank you! :)
