Hi Gringo,

Since I'd received no reply for so long, I've just referred this problem to the Help Staff, but its submission form did not permit the inclusion of the appropriate logs, so I'd still appreciate any assistance I can get from anyone. My system shows no sign of infection, but "daledoc" opined that that the problem could still be caused by an "infection" such as a PUP. Meanwhile SUPERAntiMalware still works fine, so I could simply stop using MAB. Let me know how you wish to procede.

Thanks,

Rob

Hello drshi

These are the programs I would like you to run next, if you have any problems with one of these just skip it and move on to the next one.

-AdwCleaner-

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.

  • Close all open programs and internet browsers.
  • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click on Scan.
  • After the scan is complete click on "Clean"
  • Confirm each time with Ok.
  • Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
  • Please post the content of that logfile with your next answer.
  • You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[s1].txt as well.
-Junkware-Removal-Tool-

Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.

  • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
  • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator".
  • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
  • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
  • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
  • Post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message.
When they are complete let me have the two reports and let me know how things are running.

Hello drshi

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notepad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links. I want you to save it to the desktop and run it from there.

1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.

When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you receive an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Hi gringo,

Attached is the Combofix Report you requested. It ran without incident.

As for my system: Aside from the MAB Heuristic Analysis glitch, my platform has operated without any noticeable problems throughout, and SUPERAntiMalware has operated well.

Thanks again for your time and effort, and I look forward to any feedback you can give me regarding the problem MAB had plus any other systemic glitches all the logs may have revealed.

Meanwhile, I'll keep on hand the invaluable apps to which you've referred me for possible reuse later.

Best,
Rob

Hello drshi

At this time I would like you to run this script for me and it is a good time to check out the computer to see if there is anything else that needs to be addressed.

:Run CFScript:

Please start by opening Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

ClearJavaCache::
Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

CFScriptB-4.gif

This will let ComboFix run again.

Restart if you have to.

Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you receive an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
    • report from Combofix
    • let me know of any problems you may have had
    • How is the computer doing now after running the script?

Hi gringo --

Before I run the script you've requested: I just noticed that one of the "fix" apps you've had me run so far has deleted all the completed game data from my Ricochet Infinity game (C:\Program Files (x86)\Ricochet Infinity). Please let me know which one is the culprit so I'll know either to NEVER run it ever again or how to avoid losing this important data should I run these apps in the future.

Thanks,
Rob

Hello Rob

Very sorry for the delay I have been very sick and have not been able to come in.

These logs are looking allot better. But we still have some work to do.

Please print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file. It will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps..

uninstall some programs

NOTE** Because of the cleanup process some of the programs I have listed may not be in add/remove anymore this is fine just move to the next item on the list.

You can remove these programs using add/remove or you can use the free uninstaller from Revo (Revo does allot better of a job)

  • Programs to remove
    • Strongvault Online Backup

Please download and install Revo Uninstaller Free

  • Double click Revo Uninstaller to run it.
  • From the list of programs double click on The Program to remove
  • When prompted if you want to uninstall click Yes.
  • Be sure the Moderate option is selected then click Next.
  • The program will run, If prompted again click Yes
  • when the built-in uninstaller is finished click on Next.
  • Once the program has searched for leftovers click Next.
  • Check/tick the bolded items only on the list then click Delete
  • when prompted click on Yes and then on next.
  • put a check on any folders that are found and select delete
  • when prompted select yes then on next
  • Once done click Finish.
.

Clean Out Temp Files

  • This small application you may want to keep and use once a week to keep the computer clean.

    Download CCleaner from here CCleaner

    • Run the installer to install the application.
    • When it gives you the option to install Yahoo toolbar uncheck the box next to it.
    • Run CCleaner. default settings are fine
    • Click Run Cleaner.
    • Close CCleaner.
: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware :

I see that you have MBAM installed - That is great!! and at this time I would like you to update it and run me a threat scan

1.On the Dashboard, click the 'Update Now >>' link

2.After the update completes, click the 'Scan Now >>' button.

Or, on the Dashboard, click the Scan Now >> button.

3.If an update is available, click the Update Now button.

4.A Threat Scan will begin.

5.When the scan is complete, if there have been detections, click "Quarantine all" to allow MBAM to clean what was detected.

6.In most cases, a restart will be required.

7.Wait for the prompt to restart the computer to appear, then click on Yes.

Get the report

1.After the restart once you are back at your desktop, open MBAM once more.

2.Click on the History tab at the top

3. Click on the Application Logs at the left

4.Double click on the scan log which shows the Date and time of the scan just performed.

5.Click 'Export'.

6.Click 'Text file (*.txt)'

7.In the Save File dialog box which appears, click on Desktop.

8.In the File name: box type a name for your scan log.

9.A message box named 'File Saved' should appear stating "Your file has been successfully exported".

10.Click Ok

11. Attach that saved log to your next reply.

Download HijackThis

  • Go Here to download HijackThis program
  • Save HijackThis to your desktop.
  • Right Click on Hijackthis and select "Run as Admin" (XP users just need to double click to run)
  • Click on "Do A system scan and save a logfile" (if you do not see "Do A system scan and save a logfile" then click on main menu)
  • copy and paste hijackthis report into the topic
"information and logs"
  • In your next post I need the following
    • Log From MBAM
    • report from Hijackthis
    • let me know of any problems you may have had
    • How is the computer doing now?

Hi Gringo,

Sorry to learn you haven't been well; I, myself, have been under the weather for the past few days because of adverse reactions to a flu shot, but your assessment of having been "very sick" certainly tops this. In any case, I'm glad you're up and running again and extremely grateful for your meticulous assistance in scrubbing my system squeaky clean. I'll comment on your instructions in order:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
 Programs to Remove
Strongvault Online Backup Not Listed in Add Remove Programs , so ...
Please download and install Revo Uninstaller Free
Installed, ran, deleted Strongvault and all  remnants

Download CCleaner
Already Installed, Update Available; Installed Update and ran Cleaner.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
This thread has been running for so long I guess you've forgotten that its instigation was a problem I had with MBAM. Anyway I've Updated it and Scanned -- "No Malicious Items were detected!", and no Restart was required.

Get the report
    Report Attached.MAB Scan Log 9-27-14.txt

Download HijackThis
Installed and Ran HijackThis, Log Pasted Below. NOTE: Some confusion here. The results page states: "Below are the results of the HijackThis scan. Be careful what you delete with the 'Fix checked' button. Scan results do not determine whether an item is bad or not. The best thing to do is to 'AnalyzeThis' and show the log file to knowledgeable folks."  Well, "Knowledgeable Folk," I clicked on the "AnalyzeThis" button and got a "No Network Connection" response, though I'm connected to the Network just fine. Now the "AnalyzeThis" button is dead. I don't know if the Analyzed list would be any different from the one attached, or of it is necessary since you will do the analyzing.

ALSO: I was told that "for some reason" HijackThis could not access my hosts file, so if the results show any hijacked domains in that file, I'll have to delete them manually (it explained how to do this).

Finally, I don't use Interner Explorer any more; but, since I seem stuck with it, the least I can do is eliminate any bells and whistles possible.

Everything still seems to be running just fine.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FINAL NOTE: I mentioned earlier that, because it was so long before you could respond to my initial post, I also referred my MAB Heuristic Analysis problem to the Help Staff, and Stefan Dasic's initial instruction  was for me to download and run "mbam-clean.exe." I've got it but have not run it because I informed him that you are now expertly guiding me through a thorough fix process. Let me know if you want me to run this app as well.

As usual, thanks a million for your continued diligence!
Best,
Rob

Greetings

These logs are looking very good, we are almost done!!! Just one more scan to go.

:Remove unneeded start-up entries:

This part of the fix is purely optional

These are programs that start up when you turn on your computer but don't need to be, any of these programs you can click on their icons (or start from the control panel) and start the program when you need it. By stopping these programs you will boot up faster and your computer will work faster.

  • Run HijackThis (rightclick and run as admin)

Hi Gringo,

Thanks for the additional "tweakers."

(1) I use CCleaner to manage my Startup Programs and keep them at a minimum. I've now disabled Adobe ARM but need VueMinder because it is my appointment and reminder calendar, and also Setpoint because it manages my mouse and keyboard settings + gives me on-screen notices when, for example, my Caps Lock is On (I look at the keyboard when I type and hate looking up and finding I've typed a whole sentence in CAPS).

(2) ESET Scan: (They now have an app that permits it to run with other browsers.) Eight Results:

C:\AdwCleaner\Quarantine\C\Program Files (x86)\NCH Software\Switch\switch.exe.vir    a variant of Win32/Toolbar.Conduit.H potentially unwanted application

C:\AdwCleaner\Quarantine\C\Program Files (x86)\NCH Software\Switch\switchsetup_v4.47.exe.vir     a variant of Win32/Toolbar.Conduit.H potentially unwanted application

C:\Program Files\SIWPortable\SIWPortable.exe      a variant of Win32/RemoteAdmin.RemoteExec.AA potentially unsafe application

C:\Program Files (x86)\Free Easy CD DVD Burner\Uninstall.exe    a variant of Win32/KoyoteLab.A potentially unwanted application

C:\Windows\Installer\MSIE38.tmp    a variant of Win32/Bundled.Toolbar.Ask.F potentially unsafe application

C:\Windows\Installer\MSIE4FD.tmp    a variant of Win32/Bundled.Toolbar.Ask.F potentially unsafe application

C:\Windows\System32\Adobe\Shockwave 12\gt.exe    Win32/Bundled.Toolbar.Google.D potentially unsafe application

C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Adobe\Shockwave 12\gt.exe Win32/Bundled.Toolbar.Google.D potentially unsafe application
------------------------------

Of these, I know that the Quarantined items pose no threat;  SIW Portable is safe and valuable; FreeEasy CD DVD Burner folder is a useless artifact; and the rest are nasty, no?
Best,
Rob

PS I got rid of the Bundled.Toolbar.Ask.F by uninstalling Java and reinstalling it, making sure to uncheck the toolbar installation; and I also got rid of the Bundled.Toolbar.Google.D by uninstalling CCleaner and installing the toolbar free version at http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download/standard
This should pretty much take care of all the potential threats revealed by ESET.

Hello drshi

Very well done!! This is my general post for when your logs show no more signs of malware - Please let me know if you still are having problems with your computer and what these problems are.

:Why we need to remove some of our tools:

  • Some of the tools we have used to clean your computer were made by fellow malware fighters and are very powerful and if used incorrectly or at the wronge time can make the computer an expensive paper weight.

They are updated all the time and some of them more than once a day so by the time you are ready to use them again they will already be outdated.

The following procedures will implement some cleanup procedures to remove these tools. It will also reset your System Restore by flushing out previous restore points and create a new restore point. It will also remove all the backups our tools may have made.

:DeFogger:

Note** Defogger only needs to be run if it was run when we first started. If you have not already run it then skip this.

  • To re-enable your Emulation drivers, double click DeFogger to run the tool.
    • The application window will appear
    • Click the Re-enable button to re-enable your CD Emulation drivers
    • Click Yes to continue
    • A 'Finished!' message will appear
    • Click OK
    • DeFogger will now ask to reboot the machine - click OK.
Your Emulation drivers are now re-enabled.
:Uninstall ComboFix:
  • turn off all active protection software
  • push the "windows key" + "R" (between the "Ctrl" button and "Alt" Button)
  • please copy and past the following into the box ComboFix /Uninstall and click OK.
  • Note the space between the X and the /Uninstall, it needs to be there.
  • CF-Uninstall.png
:Remove the rest of our tools:

Please download DelFix and save it to desktop. This tool will remove all the tools we used to clean your pc.

  • Double-click DelFix.exe.
  • select all options avalible
  • Click the Run button.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.
  • If asked to restart the computer, please do so
:The programs you can keep:

Some of the programs that we have used would be a good idea to keep and used often in helping to keep the computer clean. I use these programs on my computer.

  • Revo Uninstaller Free - this is the uninstaller that I had you download and works allot better than add/remove in windows and has saved me more than once from corrupted installs and uninstalls

CCleaner - This is a good program to clean out temp files, I would use this once a week or before any malware scan to remove unwanted temp files - It has a built in registry cleaner but I would leave that alone and not use any registry cleaner

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware The Gold standerd today in antimalware scanners

:Security programs:

One of the questions I am asked all the time is "What programs do you use" I have at this time 4 computers in my home and I have this setup on all 4 of them.

  • Microsoft Security Essentials - provides real-time protection for your home PC that guards against viruses, spyware, and other malicious software.
  • WinPatrol As a robust security monitor, WinPatrol will alert you to hijackings, malware attacks and critical changes made to your computer without your permission. WinPatrol takes snapshot of your critical system resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without your knowledge.
  • Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is a new and powerful anti-malware tool. It is

totally free but for real-time protection you will have to pay a small one-time fee. We used this to help clean your computer and recomend keeping it and using often. (I have upgraded to the paid version of MBAM and I am glad I did)

Note** If you decide to install MSE you will need to uninstall your present Antivirus

:Security awareness:

It is good security practice to change your passwords to all your online accounts on a fairly regular basis, this is especially true after an infection. Refer to this Microsoft article

Strong passwords: How to create and use them Then consider a password keeper, to keep all your passwords safe. KeePass is a small utility that allows you to manage all your passwords.

As Java seems to get exploited on a daily basis I advise to disable java in your web browsers - How to disable java in your web browsers - Disable Java

The other question I am asked all the time is "How can I prevent this from happening again." and the short answer to that is to be aware of what is out there and how to start spotting dangers.

Here are some articles that are must reads and should be read by everybody in your household that uses the internet

Here is some more reading for you from some of my collegesquoted from Tech Support Forum

Conclusion

There is no such thing as ‘perfect security’. This applies to many things, not just computer systems. Using the above guide you should be able to take all the reasonable steps you can to prevent infection. However, the most important part of all this is you, the user. Surf sensibly and think before you download a file or click on a link. Take a few moments to assess the possible risks and you should be able to enjoy all the internet has to offer.

I'd be grateful if you could reply to this post so that I know you have read it and, if you've no other questions, the thread can then be closed.

I Will Keep This Open For About Three Days, If Anything Comes Up - Just Come Back And Let Me Know, after that time you will have to send me a PM

My help is free, however, if you wish to make a small donation to show your appreciation or to help me continue the fight against Malware, then click here -->btn_donate_SM.gif<-- Don't worry every little bit helps.

NOTE: NO MENTION OF HiJackThis OR THE Junkware Removal Tool. SHOULD I KEEP THESE?

(3) In accordance with your recommendations:
    (a) I'll keep Revo

    (b) I've used CCleaner for many years, including its Registry Cleaner. To be truthful, I've never understood why so many advanced users seem to shy away from competent reg cleaners; this one's pre-cleaning list has always quite conservatively shown archaic keys and useless clutter; and, although it always creates a backup before cleaning, my registry has always functioned perfectly.

©  Re MBAM: I've also used this for years, but I've had to uninstall it temporarily. I installed the Pro Trial version to see if it could solve the Free version's problem with hanging on its Heuristic Analysis, but it did not; and I saw no improvement over what I've been obtaining from the Free version plus other apps I'm running. Thus, I let the Trial period run out, only to find that it then turned into a "Nag" version that no longer permitted settings that the Free version provided; so, I'm going to return to my previous config that included the Free version plus SUPERAntiSpyware in reserve (as recommended by Bleeping Computer) for problem-solving.

    (d)  I've also used MS Security Essentials for years, as well as WinPatrol.

    (e)  I've disabled Java.

    (f)  Thanks for the recommended reading; I'll peruse it.

    (g)  Along with your recommendations, I would also include Hard Disk Sentinel (http://www.hdsentinel.com/). Had I been running it on my old machine it would have warned me of the untimely death of my hard drive; but, even though I discovered it too late, it kept my system chugging along on a wing and a prayer until I could manage to salvage a goodly portion of data. Then, when I immediately installed it on my new machine and used it to check my new hard drive, it discovered and repaired quite a few bad sectors -- one quite large -- which is common on new disks. Now, I have it on my start menu so that every time I reboot it assures me that all is well with my hard drive, then I put it back to sleep. A superb added benefit is that its CEO and leading developer, Janos Mathe, is hands-down the most conscientious and helpful advisor imaginable, giving detailed, personal attention to every user's problem, Free or Pro version.

Finally, sorry I can't donate more than a sawbuck, but thanks to medical bills I'm currently up to my eyeballs in debt. Also, the fact is that I asked for help only because of the problem I was having with MABM, which you solved for me immediately. When you then continued to help me scrub my entire computer I went along for the ride, even though my operating system has been operating perfectly throughout. Please know that your conscientiousness has been greatly appreciated!

Best,
Rob

PS All I now need from you is whether I should keep HiJackThis and/or the Junkware Removal Tool and, if so, under what conditions should either be run?

Hello

" I've never understood why so many advanced users seem to shy away from competent reg cleaners; this one's pre-cleaning list has always quite conservatively shown archaic keys and useless clutter; " - sooner or later they make a mistake and the potential damage is way greater than any potential good

to end the trial of MBAM

To end the trial

You can open Malwarebytes antimalware and click on dashboard at the top

To the right of where it says "Real-Time Protection" click on where it says "end Trial"

Or you can wait for the trial to end

Once a free trial has expired, you may wish to eliminate the notifications about the trial being expired, or you might even want to purchase the software or activate it if you already own a valid license. To do any of those things you first need to click on the balloon tooltip notification when it pops up:

Once you click on the tooltip you'll be presented with a window which offers you three choices

Clicking on "Buy Premium" will take you to the product purchase page, allowing you to purchase a license.

Clicking "Already have a license" will allow you to activate the product with your ID and Key assuming you've purchased a license already.

Clicking on "End Trial" will remove Malwarebytes Anti-Malware from your tray thus eliminating the prompts that your trial has expired and reverting the product to the normal free version behavior.

Hijackthis is a little outdated and only use to do what I did and JRT and adwarecleaner are updated all the time so it is best to redownload as needed.

and thank you for your gift

Gringo
