Hi,

Navigate to your C:\Windows folder and search for the file regedit.exe

Rightclick it and select to rename the file. Rename it to reg3dit.exe

Then launch the reg3dit.exe in order to open your Registry Editor.

There, browse to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\drivers32

You'll see on the left that you can expand the keys (they will look like folders). So expand them until you get drivers32

Rightclick the drivers32 key (folder) and select to export:

drivers32b.gif

Give it a name and export it as a txtfile on your desktop.

Then copy and paste the contents of it in your next reply.

If confused, please ask first.

Extra note.. after you have used the renamed regedit.exe (reg3dit.exe), look in your Windows folder if Windows File Protection placed a new regedit.exe there again (it should). If not, then rename reg3dit.exe back to regedit.exe.

Hi,

This is confusing now. Is the drivers32 export from before or after the System restore? Because if it was from before, then the logs are useless since they don't make sense. I don't want a Hijackthislog anyway since it won't show your problem. All I want is an UP TO DATE export of the drivers32 key. So please give me an update on this because it's confusing for me if you perform other steps in between that I didn't ask.

Thanks. :P

Ok.

In that case...

go to this part of the forum: http://www.malwarebytes.org/forums/index.php?showforum=55

Start a new thread there, because I need a file from your computer which you have to attach there.

Browse to the following file:

C:\WINDOWS\rgif.omf

Rightclick and select to zip it. This should create a rgif.zip folder.

Upload/attach that folder in the thread you started in that other forumpart.

Once you've uploaded that file, * Open hijackthis, click 'config' (bottom right)

Choose the tab 'misc Tools' on top.

Choose 'delete a file on reboot'

In the field, copy and paste next:

C:\WINDOWS\rgif.omf

Click open.

Hijackthis will tell you that this file will be deleted on next reboot and if you want to reboot now. Click Yes/ok

Your system should reboot now.

Then, Open notepad and copy and paste next present in the quotebox below in it:

(don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4)

REGEDIT4

[KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32]

"aux"="wdmaud.drv"

Save this as fix.reg Choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.

It should look like this: reg.gif

Doubleclick on it and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click yes/ok.

Above steps should resolve your problems, so let me know in your next reply. You'll also be able to update malwarebytes then :P

Well I dont know if this is strange or Im doing something wrong.

I havent used winzip in a long time. I only have winrar. When I made the rgif.omf file into a rar file and tried to upload it I was told I dont have permission to upload that kind of file. So I downloaded winzip and made a regular zip file out of rgif.omf and when I tried that I was told the same thing, not authorized. What is wrong or what am I doing wrong.

I have not taken any other steps yet.

well I did everything stated and yes malwarebytes did update (and is running a quick scan right now) but I am still having problems with mcafee.

I think that I may know what is partly wrong. When I went to windows/rgif.omf I noticed that there is also an rgif.omfx and rgif.omfxxxxxx and an rgif.omfxxxxxxxxx all the way up to rgif.omfxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

This isnt good is it?

Should I use hijack this to delete all these files on reboot?

Mcafee is downloading the latest update now so it may be fixed, and malwarebytes has found two more problems I will post more when both are done.

No, not needed since the infection is disabled now. So just delete those files manually (rightclick and select delete).

About McAfee, it's not always malware that is the problem. In a lot of cases, McAfee is its own problem. You may want to read this: http://miekiemoes.blogspot.com/2008/02/wha...fee-lately.html

if I disable and uninstall mcafee what FREE products can I use to ensure my computer is safe?
I personally prefer Avira. http://www.free-av.com/ This is a good basic Antivirus which is great in detection and removal and... for free.

It also has a Premium version which isn't free, but more powerful in detection (also scans for adware/spyware and has more features) and has some extra features. And they also have an Internet Security suite (Firewall included). See here below for a comparison between the different products: http://www.free-av.com/en/products/1/avira..._antivirus.html

As you see, the non free versions aren't expensive at all...

How are things now?

If you decide to install Avira, make sure you uninstall McAfee first and rebooted. This because more than 1 Antivirus is not compatible and may cause a lot of problems, especially with McAfee.

In case you're having problems with removing McAfee, then Download and run the McAfee Consumer Products Removal tool (MCPR.exe).

Running the McAfee Consumer Product Removal tool (MCPR.exe) removes all 2005, 2006, and 2007 versions of McAfee consumer products.

  • McAfee Security Center
  • McAfee VirusScan
  • McAfee Personal Firewall Plus
  • McAfee Privacy Service
  • McAfee SpamKiller
  • McAfee Wireless Network Security
  • McAfee SiteAdvisor
  • McAfee Data Backup
  • McAfee Network Manager
  • McAfee Easy Network
  • McAfee AntiSpyware

Download the removal tool from http://download.mcafee.com/products/licens...atches/MCPR.exe

  • Click Save and save the file to any folder on the computer.
  • Navigate to the folder where the file is saved.
  • Double-click MCPR.exe.
  • Click Run. A Command Line window will be displayed, and then close automatically. Wait for a second Command Line window to be displayed.
Note: Do not double-click MCPR.exe again, you may have to wait up to 1 minute for the next window to appear.
After the second window appears, the program will begin the cleanup.
  • Observe the installation, which could take several minutes. The following message will be displayed in the Command Line window:
The machine must reboot to complete the un-installation. Reboot now? [y.n]
  • Press Y on the keyboard.
  • Wait for the computer to restart.

All McAfee products are now removed from your computer.

These McAfee removal instructions can be found at http://ts.mcafeehelp.com/faq3.asp?docid=408302

Also,

Please read my Prevention page with lots of info and tips how to prevent this in the future.

And if you want to improve speed/system performance after malware removal, take a look here.

Extra note: Make sure your programs are up to date - because older versions may contain Security Leaks. To find out what programs need to be updated, please run the Secunia Software Inspector Scan.

Happy Surfing again! :P
