Was cleaned of malware, did System Restore, now can't run/install/uninstall MalwareBytes

Recommended Posts

Hello, I'm working on a Windows 8.1 64-bit laptop that had quite a few bits of malware and virus, including iLivid, MyBackup, Advanced-System Protector, Extended Update, idle~Crawler, iWebar, OBRONA BlockAds, Right Backup, Search module, and Search Protect.

Yesterday I used Malware-bytes and Eset Nod32 Online Scanner to successfully scan and clean the computer, however afterwards it seemed the computer was still running slowly to the point of freezing, and would sometimes not fully startup at all except for in safe-mode.  I tried using Defraggler and CCleaner to help optimize the laptop, but it didn't seem to help.  I also tried the Windows System File Checker program through cmd prompt, and received the following error: (attached)

I searched online about this error that SFC generated, and found a program called SFCFix that was made to automatically fix the Amd64\CNBJ2530.DPB error.  I'm not sure if it worked, but I also attached the resulting log.

I decided to try a System Restore to 5 days earlier from now to see if that would help, however now the malware/virus programs were partially installed again (listed in Add/Remove Programs, in the start menu, and running automatically at startup).  Also, when I tried to run Malware-bytes again to remove these reinstalled malware/viruses, I get the following error:

Run-time error '383':
'Text' property is read-only

I tried to uninstall Malware-bytes, but I get this error during the process:

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.x is currently installed and could not be uninstalled properly. Please uninstall Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.x manually, reboot, and then try the installation again.

I then tried to install Malware-bytes with the installation .exe, but during the process I get this error message:

Messages file "C:\Program Files (x84)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\unins000.msg" is missing. Please correct the problem or obtain a new copy of the program.

I tried to use the Eset Nod32 Online Scanner, as well as the already-installed McAfee Internet Security and Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool, to find/clean for malware/viruses, and while they found a few viruses, I'm not sure if they actually quarantined/deleted them.  I did consider trying ComboFix next, but decided to find some help online here before doing anything else.  If I could just get Malwarebytes to install/work again at least, that would be very helpful.

Reading the introduction thread to this message board, I ran the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool, and attached the two logs from it.

Thank you.

Hello, and thanks for replying back with some information.  Last night I went ahead and followed this guide (http://malwaretips.com/blogs/malware-removal-guide-for-windows/) and successfully cleaned the computer with several scanning/cleaning programs in the guide.  I was also able to eventually get Malwarebytes to work again, by copying the Malwarebytes folder found in Program Files from a working computer's directory to the bad one, and force Malwarebyte to do a reinstallation properly from that.  After following through the guide, I was finally able to use Malwarebytes properly, and scanned/cleaned the few leftover bits of malware on the system.  The computer seems to be clean now, and it also isn't slowing down to the point of freezing either.  Additional scans with Malwarebytes and McAfee Security shows that the computer is clean now, so this thread can be closed.  Thanks again for your reach out for help; I'll keep this forum in mind in the future.
