super slow laptop - 53 threats detected..

Hello,

 

This is first time for me posting here, so bear with me!

 

I have an Acer Aspire AS5750-6845 LX.RLY02.177 Notebook PC - Intel Core i5-2430M 2.4GHz, 4GB DDR3, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. A couple of months ago it started getting really slow, REALLy slow...it seems to boot up fine but one's your logged in, just clicking the start button will take at least 10 minutes before the menu pops up. I ran it in safe mode today and was able to do a scan with Malwarebytes; it showed 53 threats and that got cleaned up. However, the problem still persists.

 

At this point I don't know where to start looking further for solutions. There doesn't seem to be any obvious malignent software present so it must be something that's buried inconspicuously??

 

Any help on where to start to fix this problem would be much appreciated!
