LipidVenom Posted August 13, 2014 ID:866141 Share Posted August 13, 2014 I have been an avid MB user for many years and I currently have a Premium version of MBAM (Lifetime license I believe), and I am looking into purchasing the MBAE in addition to the MBAM I use. I just had a few questions. 1. Will my MBAM license work for MBAE?2. If no to Q-1 and these two are definitely separate, are there any plans to bundle these two products?3. Will it conflict with AV products that have IE security version? (I use a paid version of Vipre Internet Security 2014)4. Are there any AV exclusions that are needed for Autoupdates for MBAE? (As my MBAM does not auto update - I am assuming due to my AV firewall not being configured)5. I often have MBAM block alot of Websites etc... so what are the benefits of stacking these two programs? daledoc1 Posted August 13, 2014 ID:866277 Share Posted August 13, 2014 Hi: I hope @pbust won't mind my stopping by to try to answer some of your questions that seem to relate more to MBAM than to MBAE? 1: No, they are separate products with separate licensing. 2: Not at this time, but @pbust can provide the official answer. 3: I think you are asking if MBAE will conflict with your anti-virus, Vipre? If so, the answer is: no. 4: I'm not sure what you mean by "exclusions for auto-updates for MBAE"??? BUT: you mentioned that your MBAM is not performing auto-updates -- that is NOT normal program behavior. 5: MBAM and MBAE work differently. @pbust will explain. I think one of our forum mods, @gonzo, explains it this way: MBAM blocks the "what", while MBAE blocks the "how". They are complementary. BUT: you mentioned that you get a lot of IP blocks from MBAM -- that could be indicative of infection, especially if you see lot of outgoing IP blocks with no browsers open. >>>So, as your MBAM does not seem to be working correctly, and as you are seeing computer behavior that COULD be a sign of malware infection, you might want to start a NEW topic over in the support section >>HERE<<. To expedite the process, please read the following and attach to your new post these 3 requested logs - Diagnostic Logs (the 3 logs are: FRST.txt, Addition.txt and CheckResults.txt). After reviewing those logs, the staff/experts may send you for expert assistance with malware removal, if needed. Cheers!
Staff pbust Posted August 13, 2014 Staff ID:866288 Share Posted August 13, 2014 Hi LipidVenom, welcome to the forum! The answers from daledoc1 are all spot on in regards to the differences between MBAM and MBAE. To add a couple of tidbits of information: 4- No need for exclusions in your AV to make MBAE work. 5- In some cases MBAM might block access to a malicious site hosting an exploit. But IP Blockers and anti-malware in general is based on signatures, and even though they provide very good protection there is nothing 100%. Since the bad guys are getting more proactive at rotating URLs very often to bypass signatures it is important to have that additional proactive layer against exploits. Also if you visit for example a non-malicious site that's been compromised and hosting an exploit (e.g. youtube.com), it is likely that neither MBAM or any other AV IP/Web blocker will block you from going to that site. LipidVenom Posted August 14, 2014 Author ID:866534 Share Posted August 14, 2014 Well, MBAM IS blocking sites that may be deemed as "Pop ups" that are loaded when I visit some known shady websites , so this is normal given the status of these sites (I should make it a habbit to visit said sights on my more secure Linux VM heh). I don't have it blocking popups all the time during normal browsing, only when I visit such websites that I am aware are less careful to allow their site to host a variety of malicious advertisements, and I am quite sure I am not infected. I will give it the benefit of the doubt and look into those logs. What I meant about my MBAM Premium not auto updating, is I constantly have an icon popup in the bottom right stating Database is out of date and reappear instantly several times (which from what I see in the forums is not uncommon). What I meant about exceptions actually pertains to a post I read about AV Firewall needing to have exceptions for Auto-Updating to work https://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?/topic/154540-will-not-update-have-to-fix-daily/ , so I wasn't sure if MBAE would require the same exceptions suggested in this post by Firefox. I was under the assumption that Auto-Updating was a feature that worked with the Premium license, and was one of the big benefits for purchasing it? As for my question regarding the purpose of stacking the programs... you answered that perfectly with (MBAM blocks the "what", while MBAE blocks the "how"). daledoc1 Posted August 14, 2014 ID:866537 Share Posted August 14, 2014 MBAE doesn't use "databases", so there are only the occasional program updates -- there are no "database" updates, as there are with MBAM or your AV.You ought not to need to put exclusions for it in your AV, but it won't hurt to do so.****@pbust**** will correct me or further elaborate on these points, if needed. The IP blocks sound as if MBAM is doing its job. However, if auto-updates are not occurring as scheduled, then please feel free to follow my original advice, running the diagnostic scanners and posting the 3 logs in the NEW topic in the MBAM support section.
