Screensaver Won't Work

Recommended Posts

My friend had recently rebuilt their computer, upgrading from Windows XP to Windows 7. She has her screensaver to be blank, and to turn on after 15 minutes. She has her computer set to sleep after 1 hour. The problem is, neither of them will work, and she's tried everything she knows. I even checked her processes, and the only fishy ones I found were just legit processes I wasn't aware of.

Could anyone help? She really wants to get her screensaver to work.

Hi:

It's really impossible to say without more information about the computer, especially its power management and display settings.

It could also be hardware or video driver issue (especially if this is an older system that was upgraded from XP to 7).

There are some nice tutorials here:

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/2111-screen-saver-turn-off.html

The following scanners won't provide much information about the hardware setup, but they are a starting point.

Please post back with all 4 logs attached to your next reply.

The forum experts may need additional information, e.g. from Speccy or MiniToolBox, but let's start with these.

You might also consider posting over at sevenforums.com, as they are more of a "general" computer forum (tailored to Win7) than we are. ;)

Thanks,

-------------------------------

STEP 1
Please run the DDS scanner and send back both logs as attachments to your next reply.

Download DDS from one of the locations below and save it to your Desktop:
dds.scr
dds.com

Temporarily disable any script blocker if your Anti-Virus/Anti-Malware has it.
How To Temporarily Disable Your Anti-virus, Firewall And Anti-malware Programs

Once downloaded you can disconnect from the Internet and disable your Ant-Virus temporarily if needed.
Then double click dds.scr or dds.com to run the tool.
Click the Run button if prompted with an Open File - Security Warning dialog box.
A black DOS console should open and run for a moment.

  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
    • DDS.txt
    • Attach.txt
  • Save both reports to your desktop
  • Please include both of the following logs in your next reply as an attachment: DDS.txt and Attach.txt
  • You can ignore the note about zipping the Attach.txt file and just post it or attach it.

STEP 2
Please run the FRST tool and send back both logs as attachments to your next reply.

Download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system, download both of them and try to run them. The one that runs will be the right version.

  • Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press Scan button.
  • It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please attach it to your next reply.
  • The first time the tool is run, it makes also another log (Addition.txt). Please attach it to your next reply.

Hi:

Is this new post in the malware removal section for the same computer, by any chance: https://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?/topic/154930-unwanted-programs-keep-coming-back/ ? :)

If so, and if it's possibly infected, then the best plan for now will be to wait for a malware helper to assist you in that other thread. :)

It creates confusion to be working on the same computer simultaneously in different places.

After your malware helper gives you the "all clear", s/he may refer you back here, if there are other, non-malware issues.

Thanks,

The screen-saver just turned on,

Very good.

I'm glad your issue is resolved.

and my most recent post is for my computer, not hers.

Hmmm, well, OK.

But you did say this in this topic here:

I'm removing adware and other unwanted programs and add-ons from my friends computer,

I was planning on using Malwarebytes and other programs to scan her computer AFTER I removed the add-ons, but I can't do that.

https://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?/topic/154930-unwanted-programs-keep-coming-back/

In any event, it looks as if you have this post here (for which it appears that the problem is resolved?), and 2 other topics in the malware removal section:

https://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?/topic/154930-unwanted-programs-keep-coming-back/

https://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?/topic/154444-weird-html-documents/

Our hard-working malware experts are mostly volunteers.

And, as you can see, that section of the forum is very busy.

>> So, could you please clarify for the mod team if THIS TOPIC and THIS OTHER TOPIC are for the SAME computer, or for 2 different computers?

Also, the advice in this pinned topic will help the malware experts to get a head start on your computer problems in the malware removal section:

Available Assistance for Possibly Infected Computers

It contains advice on how to provide some preliminary logs to help the malware experts to better assist you.

Thanks very much,
