MBAM Windows 8.1 Issues

Recommended Posts

Hello, I've been having issues with Malwarebytes recently. Every 5-7 days, my copy of MBAM fails to launch on startup. Upon opening the program myself, I am greeted with "Your system is not fully protected." Real time protection displays the status: "No protection". Clicking "Fix Now" resulted in the program becoming unresponsive for a few moments, and nothing else. I attempted to update the database, resulting in the status "Unable to access update server" Upon attempting to look under the about section to find what version of Malwarebytes I was using, I found that the Build Date area showed nothing. However, I am certain I'm on version 2.0.2.1012. I downloaded a copy of the Mbam-Check program from another thread with similar complaints, and I will upload the log file, and a zip file containing two screenshots as attachments. The way I've fixed this in the past is a simple uninstall and reinstall, but as mentioned earlier, every 5-7 days, the problem returns.

Thank you.

Hello and :welcome:

A couple of easy things to check:

>> 1. First, please be sure your system date/time are correct.

>> 2. Then, please be sure that your AV and firewall both give MBAM full permissions. It's possible that your AV or firewall might be treating the new build as a new program and may be blocking it -- the files that need to be excluded can be found =>HERE<=. Please post back if you need help with that.

>> 3. Also, please check to be sure there are no "Detected Threats" that need to be dealt with first, as this can prevent the program from updating: Click the "Scan" button at the top of the dashboard and verify that there are no detected threats (especially PUPs or PUMs) awaiting your actions.

***NOTE: If your last scan was with database update 2104.07.26.09 and you have detected items that need attention (especially windows files) do not Quarantine those files - there was a bug with that update.

If those suggestions don't resolve your issue:

  • Please follow the steps in this pinned topic to uninstall your current version of MBAM and reinstall the latest build - MBAM Clean Removal Process 2x
  • If that does not correct the issue, then please read the following and post back attached to your next reply the 3 requested logs - Diagnostic Logs (the 3 logs are: FRST.txt, Addition.txt and CheckResults.txt)
  • NOTE: There is an FAQ section with valuable information located here - Common Questions, Issues, and their Solutions
Please let us know how it goes.

Thanks,

try to remove MBAM with removal tool, reboot and reinstall   http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam-clean.exe

Thank you for the quick reply. Reinstalling the program does fix it, however, this is only temporary. 5-7 days later, it will return to it's broken state (as proven by the near weekly cycle of reinstallation that has continued for about 3 months). I will still try again, though. Hopefully this works.

Go ahead and do the reinstall, then also provide the three diagnostic logs so we can review them to see if we can tell what may be happening. If it happens again, there are other tools we can run to collect a crash dump so we can give it to the developers for review.

Lets start with the three logs though...

Just finished with the reinstallation and getting the logs, they're provided below. Thank you again

You have a couple of issues going on and you're running old exploited Java so you should uninstall it and if at all possible try to run your computer without Java.

Please try the following and see if this corrects your issue or not and let us know.

Well, this is a bit quicker than I expected. Upon booting my computer this morning, I found that Malwarebytes refused to open whatsoever. I'll grab some log files from it in it's current state, and then I'll try rebooting to see if that fixes it. Logs should be below (as long as I dont upload the wrong file again.)

I'm uninstalling Java as this is typed, however I will end up needing it later. Perhaps they've updated the 64 bit version recently. I'll look into that in a few moments. I'm running the Net Conf Fix now. It finished, and still no luck running MBAM at the moment, however, I will see how it reacts upon a reboot. I'll post the result in a few minutes.

Actually, I just ran Mbam-Check after typing all of this. It seems that it doesn't wish to run, either. I'll chalk that up to Windows 8.1 having problems, and move swiftly onto the rebooting bit. The other two logs from FRST should be below, however.

Thank you again for the assistance.

Alright, I'm back on the computer. I watched task manager when I logged in, waiting for malwarebytes to open, however, it never did. I ran the program manually and watched task manager again. The program ran in the background for a few moments before closing. It seems that I now have absolutely no way of accessing it. I believe I have seen this before, as well. Although it usually wasn't this quickly after a reinstall. I'm getting a bit unlucky with this go, it seems. I tried running Mbam-Check again as well, same problem, the program opened, asked me for permission, stayed black for a moment, and closed, no log file was created.

I believe a reboot into safe mode followed by a reboot into regular Windows fixed this issue last time, should I try that?

Hi:

Until AdvancedSetup and Firefox return.....

Rather than trying other things, have you completed the steps in the pinned topic for which AdvancedSetup provided the link, as shown below?

To minimize confusion for everyone, please post back after completing those steps in that tutorial, rather than continuing to "self-medicate". ;)

We'll go from there. :)

Thanks!

Hello.

Yes, I did complete the steps given in the previous posts. I ran the "Net Conf Fix" about 2 posts ago, and rebooted the machine as told to. Malwarebytes still refused to open, so I wasn't able to complete the final step, updating it. Sorry about getting a bit ahead of myself, I'd just like to have MBAM working as soon as I can. I made the extra post to explain that I have encountered a new issue, one which may cause problems with the steps we were already in the middle of. I'm sorry if I did cause confusion The only extra step I actually took was creating more log files, which I hope doesn't mess with the process. Anyhow, thank you for the help.

Sorry for the delay. Can you please get me all new logs so I can see what's going on. Please restart the computer again though before running these new scans and then post back.

If I've not replied by the end of the day then please send me a PM reminder.

Please read the following and post back the 3 requested logs. Make sure you place a check mark in the Additions.txt check box to get a new log for that as well

Diagnostic Logs

Thank you

The problem is that I actually can't get the mbam-check log (and I did try again just now). The program opens, asks for permissions, closes, and doesn't save the log anywhere. I've been unsuccessful in every attempt to create one, and this has been happening ever since the day after I installed malwarebytes again. I'll still include the other two logs, until I can get mbam-check working.

So what if you temporarily disable your antivirus and then try to run it?

Are you also right clicking and choose "Run as administrator"  ?

Sorry for the delayed reply. I wasn't at home yesterday.

I disabled Avast! Antivirus and tried to run it, still no luck. Same goes for running it as administrator.

Okay, maybe it's best we have you go over to the malware removal forum and let them take a deeper look at a possible infection.

I would suggest following the advice from the topic here Available Assistance for Possibly Infected Computers and having one of the Experts assist you with looking into your issue.

Thanks
