Malwarebytes won't scan or update on Windows 8.1

Recommended Posts

I bought a 3-license Malwarebytes package.  I installed it on two Windows 7 machines and it runs along with my Avast! anti-virus no problem.

I installed it on a 3rd PC running Windows 8.1 and after a week I find I am no longer able to update or run a Malwarebytes scan.

I am running Windows Defender (included AV/AM with Windows 8) on the Windows 8.1 PC because Windows 8, in general has never seemed to run well whenever I've added another company's AV product.  I had Avast! running on this same PC at one point in time but was never able to run a Windows update when it was installed.  Uninstalled Avast! and switched over to Windows Defender and Windows updates proceeded normally.

I added Malwarebytes since every AV product I've worked with won't find malware before Malwarebytes does.  So my PC is still running Windows Defender in conjunction with Malwarebytes.

Does Windows 8 not like interacting with AV/AM products other than Windows Defender in general?  Is this why I'm having this issue or do I need to change something?

Hello and :welcome:

Malwarebytes will run fine on Windows 8 and also interact with other AV products...

A couple of easy things to check:

>> 1. First, please be sure your system date/time are correct.

>> 2. Then, please be sure that your AV and firewall both give MBAM full permissions. It's possible that your AV or firewall might be treating the new build as a new program and may be blocking it -- the files that need to be excluded can be found =>HERE<=. Please post back if you need help with that.

>> 3. Also, please check to be sure there are no "Detected Threats" that need to be dealt with first, as this can prevent the program from updating: Click the "Scan" button at the top of the dashboard and verify that there are no detected threats (especially PUPs or PUMs) awaiting your actions.

***NOTE: If your last scan was with database update 2104.07.26.09 and you have detected items that need attention (especially windows files) do not Quarantine those files - there was a bug with that update.

If those suggestions don't resolve your issue:

  • Please follow the steps in this pinned topic to uninstall your current version of MBAM and reinstall the latest build - MBAM Clean Removal Process 2x
  • If that does not correct the issue, then please read the following and post back attached to your next reply the 3 requested logs - Diagnostic Logs (the 3 logs are: FRST.txt, Addition.txt and CheckResults.txt)
  • NOTE: There is an FAQ section with valuable information located here - Common Questions, Issues, and their Solutions
Please let us know how it goes.

Thanks,

I added the exclusions to the Windows firewall and was able to run the malwarebytes scan successfully with the 'Scan completed successfully! No malicious items were detected!' result.

When I try to update the database version, I get the 'Unable to access update server' response.
