Malwarebytes won't update database

The program, the premium version, popped up a "Update database" window which does nothing but disappear and return when clicked.  I downloaded and ran the uninstaller, rebooted and tried to install the new file that I downloaded.  The installer hung and left a blank strip when creating the directories.  Had to hit reset to shut down as the task manager wouldn't kill the process.  Being an optimist, I tried running the installer again.  This time it got to the "finished" stage but wouldn't complete.  Shut off the computer again.  I did have AVG disabled throughout the process.

 

The failure to update the database seemed to start without making any changes to the system - no new software or anything.  The system is running XP SP3.  Any help will be welcome!

1. Please uninstall your current version of MBAM and reinstall the latest version. MBAM Clean Removal Process 2x
