Google Chrome and the notorious "about:blank"

I have this problem lately on google chrome and what happens is when I open a new tab I get the usual New Tab with google and my favorite pages. However, when i use the search bar and search for something on google, I get redirected to About:Blank for half a second and back to the search results. Some say that this means someone is tracking what i am doing. 

 

Also, soemtimes when I search using the same search bar, I get cannot connect to google.com. Yet, other websites (like youtube) still works.
