No Real Time Protection and can't update

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have been a malware user with a license since 2009. I recently noticed that my mbam stopped scanning, so I went in and updated all of my settings. However, it is still not running or updating. Any suggestions? Should I uninstall and reinstall it?

My other AV program is Avast. I ran a boot time scan that came out clean.

Hi, rosebud:

Hi,
I have been a malware user with a license since 2009. I recently noticed that my mbam stopped scanning, so I went in and updated all of my settings. However, it is still not running or updating. Any suggestions? Should I uninstall and reinstall it?

A couple of easy things to check:
>>First, please be sure your system date/time are correct.
>>Then, please be sure that your AV and firewall both give MBAM full permissions. It's possible that your AV or firewall might be treating the new build as a new program and may be blocking it -- the files that need to be excluded can be found HERE (just the 1 reply, not the entire thread). Please post back if you need help with that.
>>Also, please check to be sure there are no "Detected Threats" that need to be dealt with first, as this can prevent the program from updating: Click the "Scan" button at the top of the dashboard and verify that there are no detected threats (especially PUPs or PUMs) awaiting your actions. ***NOTE: If your last scan was with database update 2104.07.26.09 and you have detected items that need attention (especially windows files), do not Quarantine those files - there was a bug with that update.

If those suggestions don't resolve your issue:

  • Please follow the steps in this pinned topic to uninstall your current version of MBAM and reinstall the latest build - MBAM Clean Removal Process 2x
  • If that does not correct the issue, then please read the following and post back attached to your next reply the 3 requested logs - Diagnostic Logs (the 3 logs are: FRST.txt, Addition.txt and CheckResults.txt)
  • NOTE: There is an FAQ section with valuable information located here - Common Questions, Issues, and their Solutions

Please let us know how it goes.

My other AV program is Avast.

Just for clarification for those who might find this forum thread via internet search, MBAM is not an "AV", nor is it a substitute for one.

(I realize that you probably already know that, so I was just clarifying.)

Thanks,

Hello, @Timelord:

Sorry to hear you are having issues.

The same is true for solutions.
They most often need to be individualized.

Dale, I added mbam to my windows firewall, and went back in to try to update the settings. All of the settings had reverted back to disabled. I know that I have changed them several times, and the changes are not sticking.

Here is the error message I get when I try to do a scan or even navigate through the mbam dashboard, I get this:

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware has stopped working.

A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.

Now this seems suspicious to me. Does this mean that the problem is with windows? I don't recall seeing a windows error message when I had non windows software failures or crashes in the past.

So is this a firewall issue, or something else. I will keep trying to work through your suggestions, but it crashes like this after I have navigated through the dashboard or tried to update.

Hi:

We may need to collect some crash dumps from your system, but let's start with the basic stuff, first.

Please continue with the suggested troubleshooting:

  • Please follow the steps in this pinned topic to uninstall your current version of MBAM and reinstall the latest build - MBAM Clean Removal Process 2x
  • If that does not correct the issue, then please read the following and post back attached to your next reply the 3 requested logs - Diagnostic Logs (the 3 logs are: FRST.txt, Addition.txt and CheckResults.txt)

Thanks,

Dale,

Uninstall/reinstall worked! It is now enabled for updates, scans and real-time protection!

Now, I have a question about my av fortress. I had an IT friend get into my computer to help me solve issues with crashing. It turned out to be an issue with power settings, which is a chronic problem with this particular computer (toshiba qosmio). I think that I had all windows av stuff including firewall OFF, but all of that is now on. He could have enabled it without telling me. In the past, the windows security software/rograms interfered with mbam and avast, so I had it all disabled. So, should I disable windows firewall and windows defender now?

Here is what I have now:

Malware Bytes (licensed version)

Avast Premiere (includes firewall plus lots of other goodies)

Do I need windefender and winfirewall, and/or could it interfere with my much more trusted av software (mbam and avast)?

Hi:

Excellent!

I'm glad the reinstall got things back to working. :)

As far as the Avast firewall/Windows firewall, thing....

I'm not personally familiar with Avast.

Many of the major AVs do "manage" both Windows Defender and Windows Firewall, disabling them or turning them off during their own installation.

For others, it might be necessary for the user to manually disable these applications from the Windows control panel.

Either way, it is certainly true that one needs ONLY one real-time AV + one real-time firewall + one real-time anti-malware.

So, if you're not sure what to do with the Windows Defender and/or Windows Firewall settings in order to work best with Avast, you might want to check with their support team or forum?

Perhaps one of the more expert forum members or staff will have some additional advice on that.

Thanks,

Well, I hear that windows defender is no longer terrible. But not terrible is not good enough, so I will keep the windows security junk disabled and run just the Avast and mbam.

Avast was suggested to me as a companion avp with mbam back in 2009. I have had both since, and I have not had one virus since. The Avast premiere has lots of cool features, like a safe zone, sand box and remote access in addition to great protection. ;)
