I had been raving about Malwarebytes to my sister, since I have bought and  installed on my computers.  Now I'm not so sure I should have.

She finally tried the free download on her laptop, and desktop computers.  Since scanning with it, her laptop only works in safe mode and her desktop crashes right after it starts up . She more or less can't use the desktop. She can't use her printer either.   The laptop keeps referring to registry files missing.  She said she did what was recommended -Quarantine the files.  Evidently she had many bad files and some were registry files that she said had pups among them. She saide she can't get the quarantine files to come up to try to restore them.  I feel so bad I encouraged her to use it.  I don't know of anyway to fix this, other than her taking them in to some shop and paying some one to fix them.  Any suggestions??

Hello and :welcome: , VB873:

We are disappointed to learn of the trouble your sister has had with her computers.
It's impossible to say from what you report whether these issues might be related to a database false-positive issue that occurred over the weekend, or whether the computers are just infected (some severe forms of malware can also cause serious system damage).

Since we don't yet know for sure, please note the following preliminary advice:

  • If the last scan run was with the database version 2014.07.26.09, and there are "Scan Detections" that need action (especially Windows system files), do NOT Quarantine those files.
  • Do NOT run the mbam-clean removal tool.
  • Do NOT attempt to self-medicate by running virus scanners or other tools that are not explicitly requested here by a staff member or expert.

Then, we will need to try to gather some basic diagnostic information from the affected computers, ONE COMPUTER AT A TIME (e.g. "laptop" or "desktop"):

  • Please read the following and post back attached to your next reply here the 3 requested logs - Diagnostic Logs (the 3 logs are: FRST.txt, Addition.txt and CheckResults.txt)

Please post back with those logs from one of the affected computers (for starters), and then please wait for assistance from one of the staff, forum experts or forum helpers.

Thanks,

Hello and Welcome to Malwarebytes

The logs shows that the computer is still infected, with at least some PUP software that needs to be cleaned up.

Being that you are probably infected, feel free to follow the instructions below to receive free, one-on-one expert assistance in checking your system and clearing out any infections and correcting any damage done by the malware.

Please see the following pinned topic which has information on how to get help with this: Available Assistance for Possibly Infected Computers

Thank you

  • 2 weeks later...

Same here.

I've used MalwareBytes for years and always recommended it.

Now, I have 3 computers that can't update their MalwareBytes and my main computer kept crashing with a BSOD. It took me 2 weeks to figure out it was MalwareBytes.

I finally uninstalled the program.

Hi, and :welcome: , sbiese:

Sorry to hear you are having issues.

Each computer is unique.

Problems that sound "the same" most often are not.

The same is true for solutions.

They most often need to be individualized.

It is less confusing for everyone if we try to stick to "one user per topic".

Please start a NEW, SEPARATE topic using the cjfj.png button.

The staff and experts will be able to more easily provide both you and the OP with individual help to get you both up and running.

Thanks for your patience and understanding,
