Strange behaviour

Recommended Posts

Just recently Malwarebytes has been reporting a failure to load the Rootkit Scanning Module and do I want to re-boot to try again. When I say yes the machine reboots with Malwarebytes scanning window active surrounded by a black screen. The scan proceeds and most recently reports finding some PUPs - TB... something or other, I cant remember exactly. I get them quarrantined despite Malwarebytes suggesting "Ignore once" and this seems to happen. However the machine doesn't "feel right". When I went to review the scanning logs for yesterday both were empty. Also what might be an un-related issue: when switching between users sometimes all I get is a black screen after entering the user password. The three fingered salute works and Task Manager loads and shows nothing unusual running. I sometimes have to reboot from task manager to get my normal user screen back. Also I've had a couple of Windows Update configuration failures followed by reverting changes messages. Is this related?

I'm running W7 64bit SP1. In addition to Malwarebytes I also have Spyware Blaster and Cryptolock Preventer active on my machine.

I have been advised to post here as outlined here:

https://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?/topic/153620-failure-to-load-rootkits-detection-module/#entry858916

Please find attached the same files as uploaded to the above thread. Hope someone can help.

Run FRST.exe/FRST64.exe and click Fix only once and wait

The tool will create a log (Fixlog.txt) in the folder, please post it to your reply.

    ---------------------------------------------

    Please download and run ComboFix.

The most important things to remember when running it is to disable all your malware programs and run Combofix from your desktop.

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

AdwareCleaner failed in Safe Mode also. JRT log is attached. MBAM reports all clear. Will have to wait to see if the problem persists. One point of note: after the computer was run in safe mode, when it started normally Combofix had disappeared from the desktop. Will be away a few days from today but will visit again late on Sunday.JRT.txt

Do a clean re-install:

https://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?/topic/146017-mbam-clean-removal-process-2x/ <---clean re-install

If you need to retrive your id and key.....

Download, unzip and run MB64.bat: (id and key will be towards the bottom)

Have done as you suggested and MBAM seems to be performing correctly - it detected three trojans, Hijack.Trojan.Poweliks and seems have removed them. I'll give it a day or so to see if the "rootkit" issue re-appears and get back to you.

Still getting the same message and when I allow the machine to restart I still get the same black screen with MBAM running in in the middle. The latest scan completed with nothing found. Is it just a bug or is there something malicious causing this behaviour?
