A most curious case !

Recommended Posts

I have used Malwarebytes free for donkey years. Last night when tried to update definitions there was also a programme update latest version. I was going to do that anyway. Then I run a threat scan everything was fine but when it reached heuristic stage after a certain point the scan would not go forward. Tried to cancel the scan and computer froze it became unresponsive. Hard booted run the scan again same symptom. Then I decided to uninstall and do a clean install. Clicked on icon then ran and got the language selection tab, which vanshed as soon as I clicked on it and then nothing. I clicked on set up file again but nothing happens. Downloaded the file again then run and the language selection tab appears for a split of a second and then dissappears. Tried on safe mode but get the same same thing. I downloaded and installed three or four  different tools to check for infections but my computer is clean. This strange behaviour only occurs with Malware bytes.

Any help would be mostly appreciated sice I do love this programme.

Thank you in advance !

Win xp SP3 pro.

Hello and :welcome:

What language are you trying to install?

Let's try this first.... (even though you already re-installed, try it one more time and then provide the logs)

Thank You,

Firefox

Thank you for your quick reply.

English or Portuguese will do fine. I did use MBAM clean removal. My problem is that after clicking Ran the language selection tab either shows for a split of a second or not at all so there is no way to proceed with installation process. Simply the next step is not there. MBAM currently is not installed on my computer. I have done step one but it did not help. I will proceed with step 2 and let you know. Thank you.

Will it not let you install with the default language of English?

Also you need to run the diagnostic tools and attach the 3 logs..

The thing is when I click on set up file nothing happens. So there is no way to install programme. I'll be posting logs a bit later on.

Thank you once again.

Hi:

Until you have a chance to post your logs and until Firefox returns, 1 quick question: are you logged into Windows in a Limited User Account (LUA), by any chance?

(To perform properly, MBAM needs to be installed from an Admin account.)

<just a thought>

We'll look forward to those logs, when you have them.

Cheers,

As an administrator. I get the impression that there may be  something dodgy with the programme's set up file.

Thank you

100's, 1000's of people download the setup file and there has not been anyone reporting that something is wrong with it.

Please post the logs for review.

Also, try restarting the computer before trying the installer again.... (do you get any errors when trying to install Malwarebytes?)

But of course it was just a silly assumption from my part. Guess what I downloaded FRST.EXE when I double click file won't open. In the mean time I unistalled/reinstalled malwarebytes antiexploit , Installed Malwarebytes antirootkit, Microsoft scanner, ExeDB antimalware, Zemana antilogger, private firewall and they all work fine. Of course now I got to uninstall them all since I have no use for them. I don't really know what is going on.

No I do not get any errors the only thing is that the file won't open or it does for a split of a second and disappears.

Cheers

Hello Tangerine:

Both Farbar's FRST and Malwarebytes' mbam-check are so proven, that when users are not able to run either, it's an extremely strong indication that purpose built malware is thwarting their use amongst other problems.

I recommend following the advice from the topic: Available Assistance for Possibly Infected Computers and have one of the Malware Removal Experts assist you with your issue.

If, as recommended, you do open a topic in Malware Removal Help, please make reference to this thread.

Thank you. :)
