Scan for Rootkits Issues

Recommended Posts

First off, I'd like to say I've been a satisfied user of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for years.
I've never had any issues with the program, until now.

Since I've updated to version , I haven't been able to complete a "full" scan.

By full, I mean selecting Scan > Custom Scan > Scan Now > and selecting everything (all drives)
The normal "Threat Scan' DOES complete successfully.
I simply can't complete a full scan. It seems to stop scanning in the same folder each time. (A windows dounload folder)
I've tried reinstalling MBAM, and it still happens.
The program just stops scanning at certain point in this folder. It doesn't crash mind you, it just says scanning this one file and doesn't stop. It stays scanning the one file it decides to stop on for hours and hours and doesn't progress further. When this happens, I can't even cancel the scan. I have to exit the program manually.
If I uncheck (Scan for Rootkits) It completes fine....
Anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening?
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I try it with Scan for rootkits disabled and works fine. Complets evrytime with no issue. They I re-seleck it and after some time it just hangs in that folder ....  I left if for 4 hrs like that and when i returned it was at the same reading...   Had to use ctrl-alt-delete to stop it...

Ok mystery solve..   what I did is I trace it down to the folder and item it was always stuck at and it’s a windows zip folder.. So this time I rescan with Scan for Rootkits selected and left it running took a nap and went back to check and it was completed in 4 hours and 33 minutes ...  So it’s just taking for ever to scan this folder/file...    I am not used to see Malwarebytes taking this long to scan a hard drive  with just the OS on it.

Until Firefox returns....

Scanning archives and scanning for rootkits will increase scan times -- the program is looking at large files (archives scanning) and more deeply (rootkit scanning).  The scanner may appear to hang, even when it is still working. So a bit of patience will usually pay off.

A bit more info about scan types:
The different types of scans were renamed in version 2, and it has caused a bit of confusion.

"Flash" is now "Hyper"
"Quick" is now "Threat"
"Full" is now "Custom"

Hyper scan is available only to paid, PREMIUM users and is not routinely needed or recommended -- if anything is found, a subsequent Threat scan will be needed anyway.
THREAT scan is the most important and most useful scan -- it is the one that ought be run on a regular basis (daily is the default setting now in 2.0).
Custom depends on what drives, folders and files are selected -- routine use of a "full" system scan is neither necessary nor recommended, as it's a task better suited to your antivirus.
