Changing AntiVirus With Malwarebytes premium question?

Recommended Posts

I need some help with installing AV on a PC that has Malwarebytes Premium 2.0.2.1013. I had MB pro then upgraded to Premium with avast disabled but running, that process took a long time to render. But has been working fine alongside Avast for some time now. Now that my subscription is up I am Switching to Kapersky Pure, I have been researching how to do this but all I can find is 2011 or older.

From what I can see: 1) uninstall mbam then use mbam-clean.exe. 2) uninstall avast then use the avast uninstall utility. 3) install Kapersky pure and activate then upgrade to newest version. 4) reinstall Malware Premium and activate. Is this right, do I really need to uninstall Malwarebytes Premium. Oh, 2 PC's have windows 7 on has XP sp3. Any download Links would be helpful. Thanks!

Yes, that is the basic sequence. :)

MBAM and KIS/PURE are compatible, but my own experience with both programs over several years supports that "best practice" method for the least chance of minor glitches.

Always be sure to reboot after running the removal tools (for both MBAM and Avast).

When you are ready, post back and we will help you set the mutual exclusions between MBAM and Pure, if you need help.

While not strictly "necessary", it can be useful proactively to ensure trouble-free performance.

For MBAM, everything you need  (removal tool, installer file, instructions) is >>here<<

For KIS/KAV/PURE clean install, the steps to remove other AVs are >>here<<

The KL global download site is >>here<<

Excellent, But, after I removed Avast using the uninstall utility in XP safe mode as you instructed. Kaspersky Pure still recognized avast 5 as a incompatible program and got stuck in a loop on installation. I also had "unknown device" appear after the uninstall ran. No idea where that came from possibly avast or malware remnant, so I deleted it in device manger. Reinstalled Malwarebytes an ran a scan. So Now I'm ready to setup the mutual exclusions between MBAM and Pure. System seems to be Clean.

Avast Uninstall Utility

How to uninstall our software using avastclear:

  • Download avastclear.exe on your desktop
  • Start Windows in Safe Mode
  • Open (execute) the uninstall utility
  • If you installed avast! in a different folder than the default, browse for it. (Note: Be careful! The content of any folder you choose will be deleted!)
  • Click REMOVE
  • Restart your computer

Thanks, @David H Lipman, for that handy and helpful link and instructions re: Avast removal. :)

@cybor:
Yes, Kaspersky products are rather finicky about remnants, drivers and other leftovers from other security products.
It sounds as if you *have* successfully uninstalled Avast and have now installed Pure 3.0 and MBAM?

To add Pure to MBAM's "Malware Exclusions" list, please refer to the screen shot below (it shows my KIS folder, but the process would be similar for Pure).

Pure likely already assigned MBAM to the "Trusted" Group during installation. And there are several ways to accomplish the task of adding the specific exclusions. The best description is probably the animated tutorial here:
How to add program to Trusted applications in Kaspersky PURE 3.0
The specific MBAM files to exclude are listed below.
(For completeness, I've also included the step of adding the MBAM cdn updates link to the firewall permissions, although I've never found that to be necessary -- MBAM has never had a problem updating on any of my systems running KIS.)

Please let us know how it goes.
Thanks,

Please exclude the following files from your Antivirus Software for your version of Windows:

For 32 bit versions of Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 & Windows 8:

  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbamdor.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbampt.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbamscheduler.exe

For 64 bit versions of Windows Vista or Windows 7 & 8:

  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbamdor.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbampt.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware \mbamscheduler.exe

Note: If you are using a software firewall besides the built in Windows Firewall, you'll need to exclude MBAM.EXE and MBAMSERVICE.EXE from it as well.

Note: Once that's done, please make sure that if either of those programs has any sort of web filter, that you add the following as a trusted site:

data-cdn.mbamupdates.com
