MBAM will not start / open

Recommended Posts

I have tried camelion and your anti root kit with no luck. I was tricked into a Java update in Firefox and removed the offending programs in the add remove programs. I can update and start MS Security essentials and am running a full scan now. Any idea what I need to do now? I have uninstalled all adobe products and went directly to their site to download and install them. But MBAM is still not opening. MS security essentials found nothing either.

Hi:

Unfortunately, there's no way to know for sure why that happened.
It could have been a "hiccup", a software conflict, a system configuration issue, or a malware problem, just to name a few.
In any event, as you mention that a clean reinstall solved the problem, you should be OK now.
If you'd like us to take a peek at your system to be sure MBAM is set up and working properly, please read the following and post back attached to your next reply the 3 requested logs - Diagnostic Logs (the 3 logs are: FRST.txt, Addition.txt and CheckResults.txt)

OTOH, As you also mention that the MBAM scan detected 3 items, it's possible that there might still be remnants of malware on the system.
If you'd like to get a free "second opinion" from one of the malware experts with some additional scans to be sure you are clean, please feel free to follow the advice here: Available Assistance for Possibly Infected Computers.

Thanks for posting with the follow-up.

Cheers,

I found my problem by following the advice I found following a search for the runtime error message I got when trying to repair MBAM with a reinstall. A simple search here showed me how to fix it. I believe there was an error created at some point unrelated to my Java update issue. I do not like the fact that I can't tell if the MBAM starts on boot or not. There should be some sort of protection notification on startup. I really do not know when it went down with the error because I assumed it was loading at startup. I don't normally check the quick start icons in the taskbar. I assumed wrong and likely this is why the spoofed java update was able to install the Rocket Malware on my system.

I at this point believe there was some kind of corrupted code that stopped MBAM from starting and I just did not know it until a threat like Rocket was being installed on my system. I disconnected from the internet before the full download was done and removed all the programs it showed in the Add remove programs. I then went to run all my scans and found MBAM would not open. I have no idea how long MBAM was down other than it was sometime since my last scan.

All that said... I ran all my scans including Hijackthis, MBAM, your anti rootkit tool and MS security essentials but only found 3 PUP threats. The rocket malware did not even change my home page or search engine like the report says it does, so I believe that I shut off the net just in time I guess.

So I think I'm fine but thanks for the offer of help!

Hi:

Please consider this as a request for a splash notification to confirm protection on startup.

Thanks

That's a good idea, at least as an OPTION (some users would likely want to disable that particular feature). :)

In order for your suggestion to receive prompt attention from the product development team, it might be a good idea to post it in the "Comments and Suggestions" section >>HERE<<. :)

Thanks!

Not sure what version of windows you use, but I use Windows 7, and what I do to make sure my Malwarebytes (and Antivirus Software) are running, is I do not allow windows to hide those to icon/notifications. I simply tell windows to Show icon and notification for both of these apps) A simple glance at the tray when checking the time, lets me know they are both running and fully protected.

  • 3 weeks later...

Nevermind I followed the MBAM clean instructions for pro and used the ID and password in my saved e-mails to reactivate pro and do a scan where I found 3 items. Why did this hapen? I thought I had realtime protection?

I agree Kep1a,  I switched from another product for the paid version of this and thought I had realtime protection.    I am quite appalled that  this product can be attacked and disabled so easily, and initially without my notice.  It took me quite a lot of time and effort to fix.   Renewal is very doubtful.
