Recommended Posts

Hello my name is Jessica.  I cannot run Malwarebytes, even after running Chameleon.  The error I received was "failed to determine update state".  I am running on Windows 8.1 / 64 bit.  I have attached my logs because when I tried to copy and paste, the screen froze and I had to refresh my browser.(google chrome)  Thanks in advance!

STEP 0
RKill is a program that was developed at BleepingComputer.com that attempts to terminate known malware processes
so that your normal security software can then run and clean your computer of infections.
When RKill runs it will kill malware processes and then removes incorrect executable associations and fixes policies
that stop us from using certain tools. When finished it will display a log file that shows the processes that were
terminated while the program was running.

As RKill only terminates a program's running process, and does not delete any files, after running it you should not reboot
your computer as any malware processes that are configured to start automatically will just be started again.
Instead, after running RKill you should immediately scan your computer using the requested scans I've included.

Please download Rkill by Grinler from one of the links below and save it to your desktop.

Link 2

  • On Windows XP double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
  • On Windows Vista/Windows 7 or 8, right-click on the Rkill desktop icon and select Run As Administrator
  • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
  • If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
  • If it does not work, repeat the process and attempt to use one of the remaining links until the tool runs.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.
  • Do not reboot the computer, you will need to run the application again.

STEP 01
Backup the Registry:
Modifying the Registry can create unforeseen problems, so it always wise to create a backup before doing so.
  • Please download ERUNT from one of the following links: Link1 | Link2 | Link3
  • ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) is a free program that allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed.
  • Double click on erunt-setup.exe to Install ERUNT by following the prompts.
  • NOTE: Do not choose to allow ERUNT to add an Entry to the Startup folder. Click NO.
  • Start ERUNT either by double clicking on the desktop icon or choosing to start the program at the end of the setup process.
  • Choose a location for the backup.
    • Note: the default location is C:\Windows\ERDNT which is acceptable.

[*]Make sure that at least the first two check boxes are selected. [*]Click on OK [*]Then click on YES to create the folder. [*]Note: if it is necessary to restore the registry, open the backup folder and start ERDNT.exe

STEP 02
Please run a Threat Scan with MBAM.  If you're unable to run or complete the scan as shown below please see the following:  MBAM Clean Removal Process 2x
When reinstalling the program please try the latest version.

Right click and choose "Run as administrator" to open Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and from the Dashboard please Check for Updates by clicking the Update Now... link
Open up Malwarebytes > Settings > Detection and Protection > Enable Scan for rootkit and Under Non Malware Protection set both PUP and PUM to Treat detections as malware.
Click on the SCAN button and run a Threat Scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware by clicking the Scan Now>> button.
Once completed please click on the History > Application Logs and find your scan log and open it and then click on the "copy to clipboard" button and post back the results on your next reply.

STEP 03
Please download RogueKiller and save it to your desktop.

You can check here if you're not sure if your computer is 32-bit or 64-bit

  • RogueKiller 32-bit | RogueKiller 64-bit
  • Quit all running programs.
  • For Windows XP, double-click to start.
  • For Vista,Windows 7/8, Right-click on the program and select Run as Administrator to start and when prompted allow it to run.
  • Read and accept the EULA (End User Licene Agreement)
  • Click Scan to scan the system.
  • When the scan completes Close the program > Don't Fix anything!
  • Don't run any other options, they're not all bad!!
  • Post back the report which should be located on your desktop.

Thank you

Hi Ron, thank you so much for helping me!  I followed all of the instructions. When I open MBAM, it tries to check for updates but stops with a pop up saying "a program has caused it to stop working".  It will not update, and shuts off after the pop up comes on. I didn't want to go through with step 3, roguekiller until you knew that I could not complete step 2.  Please advise if you want me to still go ahead and download roguekiller anyway.  Thanks in advance!

Sorry for the wait!  I ran Roguekiller and it said scan is finished. Then next to that it said, "please check tabs and delete the ones with buttons" or something to that effect.  So I just closed Roguekiller figuring that checking tabs and deleting things meant fixing the problems.  I don't see a report on the desktop.  So sorry for the inconvenience. Bear with me lol!

I have the report now... Please disregard my last comment.  I remembered RogueKiller had that report button, but figured it meant report your results to the site.  I reran the scan and clicked report; here are the results:

Hi Ron, I did step 4 & 5 successfully, and I have the logs. But when I tried to update MBAM, it says "unable to access update server".  I didn't want to go on to step 7 just in case.  I did want to post the logs from Junkware removal and adwcleaner so you could see what we're working with here. Thanks in advance!

I remembered last time you said to go ahead with the other steps even though MBAM hadn't worked. When Farbar finished, I only received a FRST.txt; I didn't see an addition.txt, probably since I ran the program before. That particular addition.txt is in my first post. I tried to put both eset and farbar in one reply, but it was too long. Here are the results from today's scans:

ESET:

C:\AdwCleaner\Quarantine\C\Program Files (x86)\SearchProtect\Main\bin\CltMngSvc.exe.vir a variant of Win32/Conduit.SearchProtect.H potentially unwanted application

C:\AdwCleaner\Quarantine\C\Program Files (x86)\SearchProtect\SearchProtect\bin\cltmng.exe.vir a variant of Win32/Conduit.SearchProtect.I potentially unwanted application

C:\AdwCleaner\Quarantine\C\Program Files (x86)\SearchProtect\SearchProtect\bin\SPVC32.dll.vir a variant of Win32/Conduit.SearchProtect.H potentially unwanted application

C:\AdwCleaner\Quarantine\C\Program Files (x86)\SearchProtect\SearchProtect\bin\SPVC32Loader.dll.vir a variant of Win32/ClientConnect.A potentially unwanted application

C:\AdwCleaner\Quarantine\C\Program Files (x86)\SearchProtect\UI\bin\cltmngui.exe.vir a variant of Win32/ClientConnect.A potentially unwanted application

I have attached the the Farbar results because it was too large to copy and paste.  I received an error when I tried to post it. Also, MBAM is still saying cannot access update server.  I won't post anymore until you advise me on the next step. Thank you so much for helping me!

  • Root Admin

No problem. We'll continue on with some other tasks and get back to the other stuff as needed.

Please go into Control Panel, Add/Remove and uninstall ALL versions of Java and then run the following.

Please download JavaRa-1.16 and save it to your computer.

  • Double click to open the zip file and then select all and choose Copy.
  • Create a new folder on your Desktop named RemoveJava and paste the files into this new folder.
  • Quit all browsers and other running applications.
  • Right-click on JavaRa.exe in RemoveJava folder and choose Run as administrator to start the program.
  • From the drop-down menu, choose English and click on Select.
  • JavaRa will open; click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
  • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location and post it in your next reply.

Next:

Please Run TFC by OldTimer to clear temporary files:

  • Download TFC from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Close any open programs and Internet browsers.
  • Double click TFC.exe to run it on XP (for Vista and Windows 7 right click and choose "Run as administrator") and once it opens click on the Start button on the lower left of the program to allow it to begin cleaning.
  • Please be patient as clearing out temp files may take a while.
  • Once it completes you may be prompted to restart your computer, please do so.
  • Once it's finished you may delete TFC.exe from your desktop or save it for later use for the cleaning of temporary files.

Restart the computer now.

Do you have the install program and the license information for your McAfee antivirus?  If so what I'd like to do is uninstall it, reboot the computer, then uninstall MBAM and reboot, then reinstall McAfee antivirus and update it and run a Full System scan and let me know if it finds anything or not. Then we'll reinstall MBAM and see how that goes.

STEPS Requested
1. Write down or obtain any required licensing information to reinstall McAfee antivirus

Hi Ron,

I did all of the steps requested.  On McAfee's user control panel, I don't see a trusted site list that I can add mbam to.  I looked around online and it seems there isn't any way to add a trusted site to the latest version.  If so, please direct me how to get there & I will!  McAfee froze at 98%, so I had to do a workaround from their website to complete the quick scan.  I wasn't sure if you wanted a quick scan or full scan. McAfee's quickscan found nothing. When I opened MBAM, it tries to update and that same error popped up again from before "a problem has caused the program to stop working, etc".  Here is the log you requested:

Configure Windows to create crash dumps on failures and not to restart automatically on system failure:

  • Click on START and choose Run
  • In the Run box type or copy/paste the following and press Enter or click on OK:

    control sysdm.cpl
  • Once the System Properties dialoge opens, click on the Advanced tab.
  • Click on the Settings... button located under Startup and Recovery.
  • Under System failure make certain that Automatically restart is unchecked, if it is checked, uncheck it.
  • Click the drop-down menu under Write debugging information and select Kernel memory dump if that option is not already selected.
  • Make certain that you know the path where the dumps are saved, which by default will be %SystemRoot%\MEMORY.DMP.
  • Make certain that Overwrite any existing file is checked, if it is unchecked, check it.
  • Click on OK then click on Apply in the System Properties window then click OK to close it.
  • Should a system crash (BSOD) occur, please pay attention and write down the significant information displayed, such as the driver indicated in the BSOD as well as any alpha-numeric error codes so that you may provide them to the developers.
  • In addition, should such a crash (BSOD) occur, please provide the Kernel memory dump created by Windows by zipping and attaching it in your reply if it is small enough.  If it isn't then please upload it to a file sharing service such as WeTransfer and provide the download link for the file in your next reply

Create Crash Dump using Windows Task Manager on Windows Vista/7/8/8.1:

  • Open Task Manager by pressing Ctrl+Shift+Esc on your keyboard
  • Click Show processes from all users at the bottom to enable that option and click Yes if prompted by User Account Control
  • Click on the Image Name column near the top to sort the list of running processes by name
  • Locate the mbam.exe process and right-click on it, selecting Create Dump File
  • Wait a moment while Windows creates the dump file
  • Once it completes it will inform you of the name and location of the dump file (typically C:\Users\Your user name\AppData\Local\Temp\mbam.dmp
  • Navigate to this location and right-click on the mbam.dmp file and choose Cut
  • Right-click on your desktop or some other convenient location where you'd like to place the file and choose Paste
  • Right-click on the mbam.dmp file you just moved and hover your mouse over Send to and choose Compressed (zipped) folder
  • Attach the mbam.zip file you just created to your next post or if it is too large, upload it to a file sharing service such as WeTransfer and provide the download link for the file in your next reply

Upload File(s) to WeTransfer:

  • Visit WeTransfer.com
  • Click on I Agree

Jessica,

Just to be sure, did you attempt the net.conf work around from this link posted earlier in the thread?

This is from the linked post:

If you are unable to update Malwarebytes Anti-Malware's database, please follow the steps below :

1: Download our netconf replacement tool from the link below

https://malwarebytes...m3mzl3f7eyl.zip

2: Unzip the zip file to Extract the "Net Conf Fix" folder on your desktop.

3: Once extracted, open the Net Conf Fix folder.

4: Double click on the net-replacement.bat file. If you are using Windows Vista or higher, please **right-click** the net-replacement.bat file and click Run as Administrator from the menu.

5: After the tool has run, please do a Logoff >> Shutdown >> Restart for a new Windows session.

Launch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and click Update Now

If you are unsure how to extract the contents of the .zip folder, please see this tutorial from Microsoft:

Hi Jekko,

Thank you so much for your help!  Yes, I did do the net conf work around, but it didn't work because when I would press update, it just said "unable to access update server".  I did it again just now as you requested, and the black box flashed on and off so quickly, I couldnt read what was inside of the box.  I restarted the cpu and pressed update on mbam, but once again, it said unable to access update server.  I wanted to see if the actual mbam scan itself would work with the fix, and it did! Even though I couldn't get mbam to update, I was finally able to complete a scan.  It said no malicious items were detected.  I had one more question: Adwcleaner found Trovi earlier in the process..  Does this mean Trovi's gone now that mbam didnt pick it up on the scan?  Sorry for any confusion and as always, TY!

Hi Jessica

Please try again - following the directions from here. QA has reviewed and believes the issue is due to the configuration file issue.

https://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?/topic/152047-what-to-do-runtime-error-database-stuck-on-20140304-program-stopped/

However if you're having issues related to an infection or PUP entry like Trovi still then let me know and we can run some other scans to find and remove it.

Hi Ron,

I tried the net conf workaround again and the same error is still popping up.  Is the net conf dos box supposed to flash on and off the screen really quickly, or is it supposed to stay onscreen where I could read the words inside of the box?  Sorry if the way I'm describing it is confusing lol!  About scanning for Trovi and other PUP entries, yes, that would be great!  I definitely have malware that has taken over my computer.  I tried removing Trovi myself a month ago, but the adw scan detected it.  I posted those results earlier in this topic.  Sorry for any inconvenience!  Thank you kindly :)

Jessica
