Help needed, on going virus

Recommended Posts

A few days ago my computer randomly switched off, upon rebooting it i couldnt access any anti virus product websites, but i could access the AVG site, i downloaded this and ran a full system scan which found a few trojans. AVG dealt with them successfully, so i rebooted the computer again and ran another full scan, all clean. Also then ran a full scan with Malwarebytes which then found some more malicous items. Also dealt with them succesfully, however my computer still acts weird, for example i cant update Malwarebytes and and windows keeps giving me Windoes Security Alerts. Then i cam across this site and did what it told me to on 'pre-HJT' thread. So i uninstalled AVG (which also wouldnt update) and installed Avira AntiVir Personal instead.

So heres the log file for Avira:

Hi,

I notice from your log that there's more than 1 Antivirus installed. Avira and Norton

Never install more than one Antivirus and Firewall! Rather than giving you extra protection, it will decrease the reliability of it seriously!

The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, your system may lock up due to both software products attempting to access the same file at the same time.

Also because more than one Antivirus and Firewall installed are not compatible with eachother, it can cause system performance problems and a serious system slowdown.

So you have to make a decision here and keep the Antivirus you prefer and uninstall the other one.

Then reboot after uninstalling.

Also, I see you are running AdWatch.

I suggest you disable it because it can interfere with the fixes.

To disable AdWatch:

* Right click on the Ad-Watch icon in the system tray.

* At the bottom of the screen there will be two checkable items called Active and Automatic.

o Active: This will turn Ad-Watch On\Off without closing it.

o Automatic: Suspicious activity will be blocked automatically.

* Uncheck both of those boxes.

* (When done, you can re-enable it using the same steps but this time check both boxes.)

Then, * Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Post the log from ComboFix in your next reply.

Please make sure you disable ALL of your Antivirus/Antispyware/Firewall before running ComboFix..This because Security Software may see some components ComboFix uses (prep.com for example) as suspicious and blocks the tool, or even deletes it. Please visit HERE if you don't know how.

Hi, thanks for the reply.

Got a few queries that i thought id best ask before proceeding with Combofix in case something goes wrong.

I dont actually have Norton installed, i used to but i had previously uninstalled it so at the moment ive only got Avira.

Also, i followed the link to disable Ad-Watch and Avira, but i dont actually have Ad-Watch installed, ive only got Ad-Aware in the system tray. Secondly, there isnt even an icon for Avira in the system tray so im not sure if its activated or already de-activated. Even when i open Avira there still isnt an icon of it in the system tray, something that i think is down to the malicous items on my computer.

Hi,

If Norton is not installed anymore, then please uninstall every reference to it via add&remove programs, for example Symantec LiveUpdate.

Then reboot.

Ad-Watch is a part of Ad-Aware which you can disable via the app. If it's too confusing, just temporary uninstall AdAware.

For Avira, if for some reason the icon is missing, then open Avira and next to Antivir Guard, click the "deactivate" link.

Hi,

Open notepad and copy and paste next present in the quotebox below in it:

(don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4)

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{c57ce618-3885-11dc-8c85-00038a000015}]

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{e5c7ded1-3908-11dc-8c88-00038a000015}]

Save this as fix.reg Choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.

It should look like this: reg.gif

Doubleclick on it and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click yes/ok.

Normally you should be able to update MalwareBytes as well now. This will detect the malware you were dealing with anyway.

  • Start MalwareBytes and click the Update tab. There click "Check for updates"
  • In case you can't update the database via the update option, please download and install the database from here. Only do this when the update option doesn't work.
  • Once the updates are downloaded, perform a full scan again.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log, then we'll proceed from there with new steps.

Extra Note:

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Hi,

What's present in above looks like a false positive. Can you do me a favour please?

Please open malwarebytes and select the quarantine tab and click the "Restore all" button.

Then, 1. Click the Start Menu.

2. Click Run.

3. Type in "mbam.exe /developer", without the quotes.

4. Run the same type of scan you did before and save the logfile and post it.

Don't select to delete.

The log will show how it was detected, if it's really a false positive or not.

Also, once you restored them, Go to this page.

Enter the url of this thread in the first field.

Where it says, browse to the file that you want to submit, click the browse button next to it and browse to next file:

C:\Program Files\GDS\Google Desktop Search.EXE

Select it and click ok:

Then click the Send File button below.

Do the same for C:\Program Files\Sony\MyClubVAIO\sections\software\shows\pre2_nl.exe

Hi,

It looks like you submitted another Google Desktop Search.EXE than the one present in the C:\Program Files\GDS folder. Is this correct? The one you've uploaded isn't detected by mbam...

Yes i think that is the correct one, there are only two files in that folder, Google Desktop Search and another file called GDS. So i submitted the Google Desktop Search one.

I also restored all files in the quarantine tab, and here is the new log file from the new scan:

Hi,

Strange, as the file you've uploaded is named Google-Desktop-Search.EXE, while the file in the log is called Google Desktop Search.EXE

In anyway, it's a questionable file, because Google desktop search installs itself in the google folder and the legit file is totally different then the one you uploaded.

This is the genuine program: http://desktop.google.com/

So not sure what version you have there.

I see you also restored other malware, and you didn't run malwarebytes in developers mode... so do next please..

1. Click the Start Menu.

2. Click Run.

3. Type in "mbam.exe /developer", without the quotes.

4. Run the same type of scan you did before and save the logfile and post it.

Then Remove the following again:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\sysproc64 (Trojan.Agent)

C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Application Data\sysproc64 (Trojan.Agent)

C:\Documents and Settings\NetworkService\Application Data\sysproc64 (Trojan.Agent)

C:\Program Files\GDS\Google Desktop Search.EXE (Rogue.Installer)

C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Messenger\riched20.dll (Adware.MyWebSearch)

C:\WINDOWS\system32\sysproc64\sysproc32.sys.cla (Trojan.Agent)

C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Application Data\sysproc64\sysproc32.sys (Trojan.Agent)

C:\Documents and Settings\NetworkService\Application Data\sysproc64\sysproc32.sys (Trojan.Agent)

C:\WINDOWS\system32\wini10733.exe (Trojan.FakeAlert)

C:\Program Files\setup.exe (Rogue.Installer)

Don't remove these:

Files Infected:

C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Application Data\sony\myclubvaio\sections\software\shows\pre2_de.exe (Spyware.Banker) -> No action taken.

C:\Program Files\Sony\MyClubVAIO\sections\software\shows\pse4_nl.exe (Spyware.Banker) -> No action taken.

That will be fixed in next update.

Then post the developers log.

By the way, no need to perform the FULL scan though, just use the QUICK scan option as this one is more powerful, smarter and faster. :(

Hi,

Yes, update Avira.

Also let me know what exactly your AOL is finding (what file and where located), because I remember it even flags harmless cookies as nasty backdoors :(

Also do the following.... * Go to start > run and copy and paste next command in the field:

ComboFix /u

Make sure there's a space between Combofix and /

Then hit enter.

This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, reset your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and resets System Restore again.

Hi,

he AOL Spyware Protection finds Bifrost and says its a 'Backdoor' threat. What should i do next?
Yes, but I want to know what it is detecting. What file in what folder present.

What Avira flags are only leftovers present in your System restore points. Those would have gone if you uninstalled Combofix anyway :(

Isn't there a log option in Aol Antispyware either? Because that doesn't make sense though. You should know what file exactly it detects. Imagine its a false positive (which happens frequently with AOL Antispyware) - no one would know since no one can see what file it is detecting?

So please look into the AOL application and search for the option to generate a log file or at least where there's an option what it exactly detects, because it should be there imho :(

Nope, no log, and doesnt even show where the file is meant to be. It's very basic, all it says is Items Found: 1, and then says Bifrost, with the options to block, ignore or allow.

i might just uninstall it seeing how ive got MBAM and Avira which i think are good enough protection.

Mbam and Avira already detect Bifrost anyway though :(

As I said, AOL Antispyware is a bit strange in detection. It even detects cookies as dangerous backdoors sometimes :)

You should be fine with the Combination Avira + Mbam. :)

Also,

Please read my Prevention page with lots of info and tips how to prevent this in the future.

And if you want to improve speed/system performance after malware removal, take a look here.

Extra note: Make sure your programs are up to date - because older versions may contain Security Leaks. To find out what programs need to be updated, please run the Secunia Software Inspector Scan.

Happy Surfing again!

Ok. Thank you very much for all your work, much appreciated. Hope you know that all the hard work you get up to is actually appreciated, and without people like you giving up their time the world would be a much worse place! So, again, thanks a lot for all your troubles. :(

And if theres nothing else for me to do with my computer, and its all ok, then goodbye from me.
