Recommended Posts

Hello and welcome to Malwarebytes forum,

You recently installed version 2.0.2  and you see a database date of 2014.03.04.09.   Right ?

You also had the program abnormally terminate with this

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware has stopped working

or

Runtime Library runtime error ....  error message This application has requested the runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.

or you see a abend screen like the one below

If you are unable to update Malwarebytes Anti-Malware's database, please follow the steps below :

First, ( but only if the program is running) let's shutdown the realtime Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. Go to the desktop Taskbar. See the blue-color MBAM icon in the notification area.
Do a Right-click on it with your mouse, and select EXIT.

1: Download our netconf replacement tool from the link below

https://malwarebytes.box.com/shared/static/4pro228sfm3mzl3f7eyl.zip

2: Extract the Net Conf Fix folder on your desktop. If you are unsure how to extract the contents of the .zip folder, please see this tutorial from Microsoft:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/compress-uncompress-files-zip-files

3: Once extracted, open the Net Conf Fix folder.

4: Double click on the net-replace.bat file. If you are using Windows Vista or higher, please right-click the net-replace.bat file and click Run as Administrator from the menu.

5: After the tool has run, please do a Logoff >> Shutdown >> Restart for a new Windows session.

launch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and click Update Now

Please let me know if you are able to update the database after this.

You have Windows 7.  Is User Account Control on?   It needs to be for security's sake.

Go to Control Panel>> All Control Panel Items >>User Accounts
Click on Change User account control settings
Also see http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/products/features/user-account-control

It does not have to be at the highest level.  One notch down would be fine.   Please advise after checking.

I also need for you to learn how to open a Elevated Command prompt window   ( just in case).

How to Open an Elevated Command Prompt in Windows 7
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/783-elevated-command-prompt.html

Maybe for now tell me the path  ( what folder) that the bat file went to.

Your desktop should be at C:\Users\Thomas\Desktop
where you report having that bat file

Get set to do a COPY to the clipboard of this following line,  Highlight the line with your mouse and do a CTRL+C on the keyboard   ( that "copies" the line to memory)

C:\Users\Thomas\Desktop\net-replace.bat

open a Elevated Command prompt window

How to Open an Elevated Command Prompt in Windows 7
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/783-elevated-command-prompt.html

When you have the open command-prompt window, then do a right click on it and select PASTE

The line above should be there.   If not, then you type it in by hand

When ready, and there on screen, tap the Enter key

The script file ( the bat file) should run fairly quickly.

After it is done, close the window.

Restart Windows.  Then go slow and careful into the program.   here is what I need for you to do.

Take a look inside the program. Start the Anti-Malware. Click on the Settings icon at the top bar up at top.
Then click the **Advanced Settings** button at the left.
Be sure all top 3 lines on that window are check-marked ( selected ).

Now a couple of changes for each of the Update task & the Threat scan task in the Scheduler.
Click on **Automated Scheduling** button.

Locate and click once on **Check for Updates** line and press Edit. Then press the Advanced button at bottom left.
Slide the window up so you can see all of it. {press the mouse on the very top bar and slide UP }
A few changes are needed.
Look at the "starting time" of the task and use some good time when you know that your computer will be on & powered & that Windows would be on at that time.
Look at the line in Schedule Options. UN-check "Show notification after successful update".

In the Frequency and Settings. Select Hourly and I suggest using the Recurrence at 4 hours.
In the Recovery Options put a check-mark on "Recover missed tasks" and select 1 hour
When done, press the OK button.

Locate and click once on the Threat Scan line and press Edit. Then press the Advanced button at bottom left.
Slide the window up so you can see all of it. {press the mouse on the very top bar and slide UP }

In the Schedule Options, put a check-mark on the line Terminate program when no threats are found
{when no malwares are detected you want the scheduled task to close}.

In the Frequency and Settings block.
You should have Daily and the recurrence set to 1 day.
now UN-check the line Check for updates before scanning {{that line should be always off otherwise the task may not run at the time set. It maybe run +/- 15 minutes of that period.}

In the Recovery Options put a check-mark on "Recover missed tasks" and select 1 hour
When done, press the OK button.

When completely done, close the window.

A fresh Windows start would be good to do at this point. Use Logoff and Restart Windows.

We need to tweak Windows Explorer.

Press and hold Windows-key+E key on keyboard to start Windows Explorer.
From the Windows Explorer menu options, Select Tools, then Folder Options.
Next click the View tab.
Locate and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files (Recommended).

I am very sorry and apologize for that.  Please delete the copy you have of "net-replacement.bat"

Then save the zip file from this reply to the folder you have named Net Conf Fix

Then extract the content to the same Net Conf Fix folder

Now go back to an Elevated command prompt then you can run that script one more time

net_replacement.zip
