System hangs on startup

Recommended Posts

I've got a problem that I believe you can help me with. I am attaching a FRST.txt file. Maybe you can make heads or tails of it and reply with a Fix file. I hope. Thank-you in advance for all of your help. My Father-In-Law's system is hanging up during startup at an Avast driver. He has Windows XP on his desktop. Thanks again for any and all help.

Hello thirsch76 and :welcome:

Please exclude the following files from your Anti-Virus software (not sure what version of you are using):

Note: If using a software firewall besides the built in Windows Firewall you'll need to exclude them from it as well

For 32 bit versions of Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 & Windows 8:

  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbamdor.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbampt.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbamscheduler.exe

For 64 bit versions of Windows Vista or Windows 7 & 8:

  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbamdor.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbampt.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbamscheduler.exe

Note: If using a software firewall besides the built in Windows Firewall you'll need to exclude MBAM.EXE and MBAMSERVICE.EXE from it as well

Note: Once that's done, please make sure that if either of those programs has any sort of web filter, that you add the following as a trusted site:

data-cdn.mbamupdates.com

The FAQ contains examples of setting file exclusions for some known A-V products

Please post back and let us know how it went.

Thank you.

Hi:

EDIT:  OOPS! Sorry, 1PW, I did not notice that you were also replying here.  :(

@thirsch76:  If 1PW's suggestion does not resolve your issue, please continue with these other suggestions....

I understand that you are reporting an XP system that hangs on startup.

Thanks for that 1 log.

There also would have been another log file produced by FRST, called "addition.txt".

Also, since you are posting here in the MBAM (Malwarebytes Anti-Malware) forum, may we assume that you also have MBAM installed on this computer?
If so, it would help to have some diagnostic information about the program's performance on the affected system.

To that end, I suggest that you please read the following and then post back here in this thread with the other 2 requested logs (checkresults.txt and addition.txt) - Diagnostic Logs

The staff and experts will review all 3 of the logs and further advise you.

Thanks,
