As the title says, I am a beginner/amateur overclocker and it has been a mild hobby of mine for the past ohhh I don't know, 8 months? So if you got em, post em up :D You know what I mean :) It is not a competition I just want to see what sort of results you guys are getting out of your hardware.

Yes I run a few rigs overclocked, at least one of the developers also runs overclocked systems as do some of the researchers. If you're really interested in that sort of stuff though there are dedicated forums with thousands of posts on the subject. Not that others here might not have good information for you it's just that there are other sites better designed for that subject.

When you build your own (or you may say "roll your own") computer the motherboard will allow you to set a higher clock-rate than if you go with an OTC PC.  That's the phun of it all.  OC the CPU, keep it cool and see how fast you can run it w/o it crashing.

I really didn't know what else to talk about at the moment so I thought I'd ask if anyone here was into that sort of thing. I understand this is a security oriented forum and I will stick to that :)

You can chat about just about anything - not meaning to quell you at all, just that there are certainly other sites with more information was all.

Cheers

Ah, no problem :) I just have a hard time keeping up on those sites, so many people, so many theories plus it is one of my hobbies, so I always look for people who share my hobbies, no matter the site :) I even asked this question on a cooking forum, someone claimed to have overclocked his toaster...perhaps if he gave it a direct port injection of high velocity wattage

i have visited overclockers.com in the past ... they have been around a long time .

these days , with very low nanometer "sizes" for the CPUs and the inherently low power consumption and heat generation  , it is possible to overclock with a stock heatsink .

for some very serious overclocking more efficient cooling methods need to be used .

better/faster RAM (the cycle timing) with heat sinks are a must .

many stock/cheap swmps/psus will wimp out ... the voltages will sag and bobble/fluctuate too much ... a *real* swmps is a good investment .

and yep ... all MBs are not created equal ... the on-board regulators and associated filtering/reservoir caps need to be high quality , very low ESR and quite possibly larger in MFD than stock .

the architecture of the MB is another limiting factor ... the trace layout/distances/capacitance to ground/delay timing and several other items have to be "re-thought" as the "speed" goes up .
