mbam.exe accumulating memory

Recommended Posts

Hi,

vista sp2

norton security suite

IE9

Mbam.exe at fresh start is 18.7M

after scan itis up to 47.9M

never returns to a lower value.

also note that IE9 gets to a point over time where it taked over 15 seconds for pages to load.

If I restart IE9 it works fine for a while and yet progressively gets slower.

Right now, my question would be, is it normal for Mbam.exe to progressively accumulate memory?

Yes its normal. Mbam.exe will use up more memory while its performing any updates and scans. The amount used will vary from computer to computer. Mine is currently at 30,800K and that is after a fresh restart today, no scans have occurred yet, but I have had a couple of updates.

Following up.

I use sleep mode, so memory remains intact.

so, upon second day.

memory start 59M

during scan 172M

afterscan 67M

So it appears that the new product version, continues to accumulate memory. the prior version did not do this.

Makes sleep mode eventually untenable and will require multiple restarts to restore low memory. Not good.

further, there continues to be the issue of slowing browsers after updates. this is easily fixed by closing and re opening the browser, but the older version did not have this issue either.

Lastly, i changed the scan schedule to weekly yesterday, but it still did a scan this morning. So maybe another issue there as well.

Hoping for a product update very soon to fix these issues.

Jun 29 2014 followup.

So, after 4 days of continuous operation, it appears that MBAM tops out at 67M of memory.

making MBAM my top memory use security progam. This would seem to be a fixable issue because at fresh startup MBAM only takes 18M for basic operation. what could the other 49M be for?

Hi,

First an update after 7 days continuous operation.

I did want to report that today MBAM memory has dropped back down from a high of 67M to 22M.

The logs only show the daily updates.

To answer your queston,

If the computer would remain stable, I would never do a restart. but there are 2 windows programs, searchindexer and scvhost(net) that accumulate memory continuously. So I guage restarting by how much memory the system alone takes before starting any programs. and I find that once we hit 75%, the computer slows down too much and needs a restart.

For example, at a fresh restart, the system takes 38% memory, 7 days later it is 61%

Update.

sorry for false alarm on memory reset. This happened because I tried to close the window before MBAN had fully updated. And that action caused the program to stop responding. I had to double click the desktop icon to restore it. And I guess that was essentially a restart.

back up to 62M today.

In this day and age, 67MB is nothing to worry about... if there was a memory leak with MBAM.EXE then it would just keep creeping up until it uses up all your available memory. Since the memory usage goes up and down, that tells us that when it goes up it due to the fact that MBAM.EXE is doing something, and when it goes back down (in your case 62MB) then its functioning correctly.

Furthermore, a computer will never remain stable without a restart. All computers need to be rebooted sooner or later.
