Malwarebyes Anti-Malware has stopped working

After upgrading from the trial version to premium, I get the error 'Malwarebyes Anti-Malware has stopped working' whenever I try to update definitions or run a scan. Tried unistalling then re-installing and running in safe mode. nothing seems to help. At least with the trial version the software operated.

 

Any ideas? Can't find anything in the FAQ.
