old computer w 1 gig of ram

Mb uses so much of my computing power that when i self-starts, I sometimes get a frozen machine till it finishes a scan or simply updates the data base. I have tried to select in preferences to not start up until i want it too but it still self starts sometimes.

Is there any way to take complete control of these start-ups.
