MBAM v2.0.2.1012 fails to start (Win8.1 x64) - logs inside

Recommended Posts

Hi there

  • Issue: MBAM v2.0.2.1012 fails to start. Nothing happens when I double click on the icon. I get Windows error report notification from my firewall within seconds of me trying to start the app, which probably means the application is crashing
  • I have been facing this particular issue only one of my desktops which has Win 8.1 64bit. MBAM (the same version) works fine on all other systems running Win7 64bit.
  • This is not the first time I'm facing this issue on my Win 8.1 64bit system. Every time I face this issue, I clean it up basis the instructions given here MBAM Clean Removal Process 2.x and then re-install. It works for a few days and then automatically stops working
  • This time, I distinctly remember that I first got a notification saying website protection had failed although file protection was still working. I tried to toggle the options but web protection remained non-functional. I then rebooted the system and the MBAM went dead
  • As per instructions here, Diagnostic Logs, I ran both Farbar and mbam-check.exe. Farbar ran fine but mbam-check did not open any log files nor did it generate any file on the desktop.
  • The FRST.txt and Addition.txt logs are attached

Hello moh1t and :welcome:

Let's let the Malware Removal Experts take a look at your system.

I recommend following the advice from the topic: Available Assistance for Possibly Infected Computers and have one of the Malware Removal Experts assist you with your issue.

If, as recommended, you do open a topic in Malware Removal Help, please make reference to this thread.

Thank you. :)

Thanks 1PW for the welcome and the advice.

As per your recommendation I'e opened a thread in 'Malware Removal Help' section, but I'm fairly confident that I'm not infected. My computer usage is almost identical on my 2 desktops and a laptop. MBAM only fails on the one running Win 8.1 x64, it's running perfectly fine on other two systems with Win 7 x64.

I also run ESET Smart Security on all 3 systems with customised firewall rules

Hi:

Until 1PW returns...

I notice mention of Truecrypt in your logs.

Is your hard drive encrypted with Truecrypt?

Do you have MBAM anti-rootkit (ARK) scanning enabled?

If the answer to both questions is YES, what happens if you disable ARK scanning from Settings > Detection and Prevention and then reboot?

Although ARK scanning is supported on Truecrypt-encrypted drives, perhaps it might be a possible explanation for your issue.

It would be easy enough to test, by disabling that feature to see if doing so resolves your problem.

<just a thought>

Nope, hard drive is not encrypted. Only a couple of virtual containers. Certain volumes of external hard drives are encrypted though. MBAM ARK was enabled before the crash.

Truecrypt and MBAM with the same configuration is also there on the other two systems

Not sure if this is of any relevance, but OS drive is an SSD

Hello moh1t:

Although totally un-necessary, a few members will post their requested individual attachment files in separate posts.

You are still missing Log Set 2, and although it may not help the Malware Removal Experts, it could help staffers in this thread later.

If you performed the requested mbam-check.exe step, and you forgot to attach the CheckResults.txt file, please do so now.

If you overlooked that 2nd diagnostic step, please perform that necessary critical step now.

Thank you for your patience and understanding. :)

Like I said before, mbam-check isn't opening or generating any logs. Does is save the log to some specific location?

Hello moh1t:

My bad. I should have re-read your first post more closely.

If run from the desktop, as recommended, then the output diagnostic text file is generated there as well.

I believe that alone makes your visit to the Malware Removal Experts quite worthwhile.

Let's hope for the best. :)

I forgot to mention this before.

I always have self-protection turned on, and each time MBAM would stop working I would run mbam-clean and re-install. Before running mbam-clean, I am unable to turn off self-protection because the application won't run. MBAM would run fine for a few days after the re-install and then stop working.

Do you think self-protection module is preventing some files from getting removed and causing the mix-up?

I could do the following to ensure a clean install and then see if MBAM fails again, yes?

  • run mbam-clean
  • reinstall
  • disable self-protection
  • run mbam-clean again
  • reinstall and turn on self-protection

Done! MBAM is working again. Let's see if it fails again after a fresh install

It is quite possible the self protection is not allowing for some things to be removed. (only staff an answer this really as they know what their too can or can not do).

I would not hurt to try the steps you have outlined.

Hello again

The issue has resurfaced again even after a clean install. I've re-generated the logs.

I've looked at the event logs. First mbamscheduler.exe crashed with MSVCR100.dll as the faulting module, and then mbamservice.exe service crashes.

Like the mbam application, mbam-check.exe is also crashing, therefore I am unable to generate 'CheckResults.txt'. 'Addition.txt' has the crash details.
