Database not updating

Recommended Posts

I never switch off my PC and in the last 6 weeks I'm getting the attached mesage several times a day.

Even if I click "Update Now", the box comes 4 ou 5 times until is gone. After a couple of hours it returns again. If I go into MB the update now is not available (it's gray).

The only way to get rid of this is to shut down and restart the PC. That is allowing MB to update database and to avoid the mesage for 24 hours or so. After that the problem always returns.

OS is Windows 7 64bits

Hello and :welcome: ,

A couple of easy things to check -- first, please be sure your system date/time are correct.

Also please check that your AV and firewall both give MBAM full permissions. It's possible that your AV or firewall might be treating the new build as a new program and may be blocking it -- the files that need to be excluded can be found HERE. Please post back if you need help with that.
Also, please check to be sure there are no "Detected Threats" that need to be dealt with first, as this can prevent the program from updating: Click the "Scan" button at the top of the dashboard and verify that there are no detected threats (especially PUPs or PUMs) awaiting your action.

If those suggestions don't resolve your issue:

(FWIW, never turning off the computer is not a great idea for Windows, for stability reasons.)

Thanks,

Bingo ! I did that and the issue vanished. In the past month I had no problems until yesterday (same message). Just repeated what you said and again problem solved. Many thanks.

On a side and constructive note I think this is not logic from user perspective. If database is not updating due to something requiring attention, user should be alerted for that in a more explicit way. Sounds almost as a bug.

Hi:

Thanks for the update.

I'm glad things are back to working OK for you. :)

Yes, this "pending scan items" behavior actually isn't new.

However, as you have not been the first person to recently report it, it has been suggested to the dev team that MBAM might be programmed to at least notify the user that there are items that need attention before updating can take place. However, see below*.

Having said that, there is one way to reduce the chance that this will happen again.

I assume that the detections that needed to be acted upon might have been non-malware items (PUPs and PUMs)?

If so, it's easy to configure MBAM to automatically quarantine these items after a scan.

Dashboard > Settings >Detection and Protection > Non-Malware Protection > Change the setting from the dropdown menu for both PUPs and PUMs to "Treat as Malware".

*Having said that, I suppose that the dev team might have reasonably assumed that most users would check their scan results, when the scan has detected malware or other items? (As long as Notifications are enabled, even scheduled scans running in the background will provide a notification popup when something turns up (clean scans are silent). So, the user would have to ignore this notification of a malware infection or non-malware detection in order to get into the situation you observed, with scan detection items needing action before the program will update. ;) )

Cheers,

Hi:

I can confirm that I had PUM to be treat as malware so the issue probably came from the PUP where I only had Warn user.

Yep, it's a bit of a quirk, to be sure.

A handful of users have been stymied by that.

Since a scan with detected threats DOES notify the user via a pop-up, it's possible that you might have closed the notification without taking action.

That then blocked the update process.

I'm glad you got it sorted and I am glad I was able to help.

Take care,
