Malwarebyutes database out of date

Recommended Posts

Hi,

A little pop-up on bottom right of my screen keeps coming up informing me that malwarebutes database is out of date. I have the option to click 'ok' but when I do nothing happens and the pop-up continues popping up every 15 minutes.

I then opened up Malwarebytes to see if there was something I could do from there.

After opening it up, there is a big button that says "Fix Now". I click on it but nothing happens as if it's not activated. Also beside 'Database Version' it has a yellow triangle V2014.06.06.05 beside it with a button that states 'update now' but I can't because that particular button is grayed out so there is no action.

I have posted a screen shot.

Anyone know how I can stop this darn pop-up?

I thought maybe I would  uninstall and reinstall, but if I reinstall I don't have a record of my licsense and when going into my acct profile I see nothing but ***** and that doesn't help. lol

Thanks so much!

Hi:

Sorry you are having trouble updating.

We will need to do a bit of basic troubleshooting.

However, before we start, you mention that you don't have your license ID/key info available.

Although we can probably resolve this without needing to reactivate your MBAM Premium license, I would strongly advise locating that info, just in case.

To that end:

If you purchased your MBAM online from the MBAM store, the license ID/key information was sent to you at that time via email.

If you cannot locate that email and did not record the information, here is how to obtain that info from the e-commerce partner, cleverbridge:  How do I obtain my license key?

There are some other ways to obtain that information, e.g. directly from the Windows registry of your computer, as explained here.

But that will only work if there was a valid, paid license for MBAM version 1.x on the system (version 2.x does not store license info in the registry).

If you purchased online from a different source -- e.g. Newegg -- then they would have likewise sent an email with the info.

If you purchased MBAM PRO or PREMIUM on a CD, the license ID/key will be in the box (either on the CD sleeve or on a card).

So, I would suggest trying to locate the original email (from an online purchase) or the CD sleeve/card (from a CD box) first.

Then, you might check these easy things:

  • EDIT: (This looks to be a likely explanation, because of the grayed-out update button) -- Are you logged into Windows from an Admin account or from a standard/limited account?
  • Is your system date and time correct?
  • Does MBAM have full permissions in your antivirus (AV) and firewall?
  • If you click the "Scan" button at the top of the dashboard to open the Scan window, are there any items/detections that await your action?

Please post back with an update and we'll go from there.

Thanks,

Your link directs to the very same topic that was already suggested.

Please note -- there's really no need to post on top of another forum member or staff who has already provided the same advice.

This can create clutter and confusion for everyone.

Let's give the OP a chance to respond to the initial reply, before repeating the same advice and adding to it?

Thanks very much,

Thanks,

That's what it was. I had run a scan and needed to complete some actions. Thanks to both of you for your help. Hopefully that did the trick if not I'll post back.

OK, thanks very much for the follow-up.

Glad you got it fixed!

Just curious, were those PUPs or PUMs that were awaiting action?

If so, you can change your settings so that they will be automatically quarantined (see screen shot).

You aren't the first person to run into this -- it's actually not a "bug" and has been around a while.
For some reason, though, it has popped up a few times recently in the forum.
But we have asked the developers to consider adding a dialog to the GUI, such as "Please take action on pending detections from your scan before trying to update!"

Having said that, I would still advise locating your license ID/key.

If you ever need to cleanly reinstall MBAM on the same computer or transfer your license to a different machine, you will need that info.

ALSO, for additional information:
There is an FAQ Section here: Common Questions, Issues, and their Solutions
And here are links to the MBAM 2.0 User Guide: Online and PDF
And there are many useful KB topics and videos at the helpdesk support page

Take care,
