Malwarebytes has encountered a problem and needs to close

Recommended Posts

For some reason I'm unable to run a scan or even update Malwarebytes because every time i try, it will say "Malwarebytes has encountered a problem and needs to close". I'm able to launch Malwarebytes though.

Yes I have already ran the Malwarebytes clean utility to uninstall it, installed all Windows updates, restarted computer, downloaded latest Malwarebytes and reinstall, but the problem persists.

I'm running Windows 8 64-bit on a Lenovo Y510P.

Since the scan won't run I obviously can't post a log.

Thanks for your help.

Take a look at https://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?showtopic=149284. I had the same problem with a brand new malwarebytes install on Windows 7 64 bit, that thread was started by someone else seeing the same thing.

Hi, @Lan1:

Welcome.

A couple of easy things to check -- first, please be sure your system date/time are correct and that your AV and firewall both give MBAM full permissions.
It's possible that your A or firewall is treating the new build as a new program and the firewall may be blocking it -- the files that need to be excluded can be found HERE. Please post back if you need help with doing that.

If those suggestions don't resolve your issue:

Hi, @patknight:

Sorry to hear you are having issues.
Each computer is unique.
Problems that sound "the same" most often are not.
The same is true for solutions.
They most often need to be individualized.

It is less confusing for everyone if we try to stick to "one user per topic".
Please start a NEW, SEPARATE topic using the cjfj.png button.
The staff and experts will be able to more easily provide both you and the OP with individual help to get you both up and running.

Thanks for your patience and understanding,

The date and time are correct, and Windows Firewall has all the mbam exe's excluded. The only other antivirus I'm running is Avira and to my knowledge it has no exceptions list, and it shouldn't conflict with MBAM anyways, as I've used these two side-by-side for about 6 months now, and the problem just started occurring a few days ago.

Hi:

OK, thanks for the updated info and the logs.

Until someone arrives to formally review your FRST logs,....

Your mbam-check log shows that you are still running the older program version.
I would suggest that you cleanly upgrade to the current version, as doing so has resolved issues for many users.
To do so, please uninstall your current version of MBAM and reinstall the latest build - MBAM Clean Removal Process 2x

It will only take a few minutes, but please be sure to read the instructions and to follow them closely for the best result.

Please post back and let us know how it goes.

Thanks!

Hi:

Your mbam-check log is incomplete for some reason -- can you please re-attach it, or run the program again and post back a fresh log.

There are some suspicious files in your temp folder -- until staff arrives to review your log, you might want to try emptying it.

Also: have you rebooted the computer at least once after the upgrade?
Also, have you set the mutual exclusions between your AV and MBAM?

The MBAM files that need to be excluded are listed below.

Thanks for your patience,

---------------------------------

Please exclude the following files from your Antivirus Software for your version of Windows:

For 32-bit versions of Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 & Windows 8:

  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbamdor.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbampt.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbamscheduler.exe

For 64-bit versions of Windows Vista or Windows 7 & 8:

  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbamdor.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbampt.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware \mbamscheduler.exe

Note: If you are using a software firewall besides the built in Windows Firewall, you'll need to exclude MBAM.EXE and MBAMSERVICE.EXE from it as well.

Note: Once that's done, please make sure that if either of those programs has any sort of web filter, that you add the following as a trusted site:

data-cdn.mbamupdates.com

The FAQ contains examples of setting file exclusions for some known AV products

When I run mbam_check that's the log I get, yes I noticed it ends at "C:/users".

Yes I restarted computer twice already.

I've added all the exclusions to Windows Firewall, and to as stated before Avira to my knowledge is compatible with MBAM. I turned Avira off and MBAM still crashes.
