Using run as administrator for program update?

Recommended Posts

I am using the Premium version of MBytes 2.0 on a Win 7 64 bit laptop.  Yesterday I was being notified of a program update (2.0.2.1012) and I was too busy to do it, so I just kept clicking 'later'.  This morning the message was back and selected to update.  It told me I had to be logged in as an administrator.

My 'normal' user account is set as a standard user for an extra level of security.  I am not a novice user, so I launched Malwarebytes using the 'run as administrator' option and entered the admin password.  I was prompted that there was an update and I choose to do it now.  I still got a message that I needed to log in as an administrator.  I conceded and switched to my admin account to perform the update and then rebooted as instructed.

I have read in a few other posts that a program update must be performed by an admin, which I get.  So I don't understand why the 'run as' wouldn't work to perform the update instead of forcing me to actually login as the admin account?

Thanks,

Alice

Hello Alice and Michael,

Please just check to insure that Windows User Account Control is on.

For Windows 7
Go to Control Panel>> All Control Panel Items >>User Accounts
Click on Change User account control settings
Also see http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/products/features/user-account-control

For Windows 8
See http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/5509-user-account-control-uac-change-settings-windows-8-a.html

VISTA ---  Turn on User Account Control. See this MS article
Turn User Account Control on or off  http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Turn-User-Account-Control-on-or-off

UAC does not have to be at the highest level.  You can set one notch below the topmost.

Did either of you experience any "runtime or expression error" message during install?   If yes, let me know that.

Beyond the UAC, a simple Windows Restart would help before you try again.

If version 2.0.2.1012 is not now installed, then do this, one time only, as a first attempt:

Uninstall the Anti-Malware using Control Panel's  Programs and Features.

Then restart Windows.

Next Download & SAVE  the latest version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from http://downloads.malwarebytes.org/file/mbam

IF your Windows is Vista / Windows 7 / 8, then do a Right-click on mbam-setup-2.0.2.1012.exe and select Run as Administrator and allow to run.

Maurice, I have UAC control on and at the highest level.  Now that you mention it, I may have had a runtime error when I did the original upgrade from version 1.75 to 2.0 while I was logged in as my 'standard' user account.  But that was back on April 17 and can't remember for sure.  But I'm sure I just logged in as the admin account to do a successful install/upgrade, so I put it out of my mind.  Is there somewhere I could find out?  I looked in event viewer and mbam logs but didn't see anything recorded.

As as said, I did get the 2.0.2.1012 program update installed by logging in as the admin account.  So your second suggestion of uninstall and downloading the update wouldn't really apply.

I want to mention that I had been running version 1.## for 3 years (2 years on my old pc (as admin) and for the last year on my laptop).  On my laptop I installed it when the account I usually use was an admin.  I changed that same user account from an admin to a standard user several months ago, long before doing the upgrade in April.  Don't know if it's relevant but I thought I would mention it.

For anyone else that may be having the "Installer error" with "log in as administrator".

Just some starter suggestions:
Please be very very sure that Windows User Account Control is on.
For Windows 7
Go to Control Panel>> All Control Panel Items >>User Accounts
Click on Change User account control settings
Also see http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/products/features/user-account-control

For Windows 8
See http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/5509-user-account-control-uac-change-settings-windows-8-a.html

For Vista   http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Turn-User-Account-Control-on-or-off

You cannot be logged in with a Windows-login-user-account that is a Limited user.
You may also run into issues if logged in as a standard user.

How do I log on as an administrator?  **PLEASE see this Microsoft article**
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/Windows7/How-do-I-log-on-as-an-administrator

As long as you have done a very recent Windows start today, and are sure you -are-logged-in with administrator rights, you can retry the version 2.0.2 upgrade by one of the three methods here.

(A)
IF the Anti-Malware program is opened now ( in a window) then Close it.
Go to the Desktop.  Find the shortcut-link to the Anti-Malware exe   ( blue-color icon) and then do a Right-click and select Run as Administrator and Allow to run.
Then do a new Update run and follow all prompts.

or (B)
Download & SAVE to the DESKTOP the latest 2.0.2.1012 version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from http://downloads.malwarebytes.org/file/mbam

IF your Windows is Vista / Windows 7 / 8, then do a Right-click on mbam-setup-2.0.1012.exe and select Run as Administrator and allow to run.

On XP, double-click mbam-setup-2.0.1012.exe.

or {C}
For Vista/Windows 7,8
Download & SAVE to the DESKTOP the latest 2.0.2.1012 version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from http://downloads.malwarebytes.org/file/mbam

Next, See and follow this to Create an "Elevated Command Prompt" Shortcut
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3718-elevated-command-prompt-shortcut.html

Be sure you have that shortcut created on the Desktop.
Be sure that our setup exe ( the one named mbam-setup-2.0.2.1012.exe ) is saved and in place on the DESKTOP.

double-click the **shortcut for the elevated command prompt**.

at the Command prompt, type in this line ( or you could Copy all of the line and then put the mouse pointer inside the black-window-command and do a right-click and use PASTE

**mbam-setup-2.0.2.1012.exe**
