High GPU load when PC idle - Bitcoin mining malware?

Recommended Posts

Hi, lately I've noticed that often when I return to my PC after it has been locked for a while, the cooling fans sound considerably louder than they used to. When I unlock the PC with my Windows password, the fans almost instantly slow down to normal. A look at my MSI Afterburner graphs show that whilst the PC was locked and supposedly idle, my GPU usage was at 97/98% and the CPU at around 25-30%.

I've tried to trace the problem by leaving Process Explorer running while the PC is locked, but annoyingly the problem doesn't occur whenever I do that.

I've tried scanning with my AV (Avast free), MBAM (free) and Adwcleaner but the problem remains. I'd be very grateful if someone can help me with this, many thanks.

(Requested log files attached, also latest Mbam scan log file.)

Very sorry for the delay. We've simply been overrun with requests for help and have not been able to get to everyone requesting help in a timely manner.

Now that we're finally getting our head a bit above water again I've been going back to review old missed requests. If you do still need help please let me know.

Thank you
