PUP.Optional_Mindspark Removal Help

Recommended Posts

I purchased and installed Malwarebytes Premium (MBAM) severak days ago. Since I ran the initial scan and cleaned quite a bit of malware, I have been getting regular popups in the task bar mostly for a malware called RadioRage Toolbar by Mindspark. Malwarebytes recognizes the threat with constant popups but does not give me any way to clean it from my system. I see the Radio Rage Toolbar program in my Windows Program List but it will not let me uninstall it - it says that it can't find 4jBar.dll. There is a directory on my C-drive for Radio Rage but I cannot delete it - it says files are in use. I have tried to disable the toolbar in my browser but your program still gives me these frequent annoying popups that the malware is still active on my system. I even tried to System Restore several times but it failed every time due to a 'missing file'.  I would like to know how to clean this from my system for good.  I have attached files and a  jpeg of some of the popups.

In addition to Malwarebytes MBAM Premium, I am running Bitdefender Total Security.  My system is Windows 7 Pro 64-bit.

MrC,

I have attached 3 text files.  I think I followed the instructions correctly but let me know if I didn't or if I need to do anything else.  I will run the MBAM scan now but will have to shut down after that.  If you have any other steps for me to take, I will have to do it tomorrow evening after work.  Thanks so far.

One last note - I just finished the MBAM ThreatScan.  This is the first scan since I installed the program to have detected no threats.

Also, it is probably not related but my Windows Firewall has started giving me a security alert asking me if I want to allow Akamai NetSession Client access to my networks.  Is this another malware issue?

It's installed on your system:

Akamai NetSession Interface (HKCU\...\Akamai) (Version: - Akamai Technologies, Inc)

Some info on it:

Then...........

Please download and run ComboFix.

The most important things to remember when running it is to disable all your malware programs and run Combofix from your desktop.

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/combofix/dl/12/ <---ComboFix direct download

Please make sure you click download buttons that look similar to this, not "sponsored ad links":

bleep-crop.jpg

Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Information on disabling your malware programs can be found Here.

Make sure you run ComboFix from your desktop.

Give it at least 30-45 minutes to finish if needed.

Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.

---------->NOTE<----------

If you get the message Illegal operation attempted on registry key that has been marked for deletion after you run ComboFix....please reboot the computer, this should resolve the problem. You may have to do this several times if needed.

I hope I ran the tests correctly.  I have 5 logs that were created today after these tests and I attached them all.  Waiting further instructions.

I will be traveling tomorrow and will not be able to hook up my computer to the internet until Friday.  I will be able to check and respond to emails via my iPhone.

Did you install this program:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Disk Speedup

--------------------------------------------

Download the attached fixlist.txt to the same folder as FRST.exe.

Run FRST.exe and click Fix only once and wait

The tool will create a log (Fixlog.txt) in the folder, please post it to your reply.

Update and run a scan with Malwarebytes

Let me know how it is, MrC

Not to my knowledge as far as the Disk Speedup installation.  I will have a brief opportunity to run FRST.exe  (I assume you are talking about the FRST64.exe I have been running) and generate the log a few hours from now.  Then I will have to shut down the computer until I arrive at my destination Friday evening.  I will send the Fixlog.txt before shutting down (probably around 2:00 PM CDT).  Please do not close the ticket.  It may be Saturday morning before I am able to get back online.  I will be able to receive emails on my iPhone.

MrC,

I uninstalled Disk Speedup - it showed to have been installed in 2011 - I must have picked up unwanted baggage.  Here is the Fixlog.txt that was created when I ran FRST64.exe.

I will run MBAM scan and then shut down until Saturday morning.  I will let you know the outcome of the scan before shutting down and I will check emails.  Thanks.

MrC,

I was finally able to get back logged in and am now ready to continue.  I should be able to work fairly continuously now for a while if needed.  I received an email notification on 5/22/2014 after your last message (above).  I think it was not supposed to be for me.  It said my system was loaded with adware; the instructions included some things that looked like what you had already had me to do.  It also introduced the message as if I was joining the forum for the first time.  It asked that I uninstall two programs, that as far as I can tell, I do not have - Extended Update and Mobogenie.  I do not recognize them nor are they listed in my Control Panel / Program listing.

Unless I hear diifferently from you, I am assuming that message was not for me.  I am attaching it (text format) for your review.  I also ran another Threat Scan and am including the log.  No threats identified this time.  I will wait to hear back from you for further instructions if needed.

At this point, I think I'm okay.  The last threat scan did not show any threats.  I was waiting to hear if you had seen anything in the last log I sent you.

When my system is finally clean, I am still thinking about reformatting the drive and starting all over.  What do you recommend?

The system is clean, starting over is a lot of work...why would you want to do that? I don't see any need for it unless there's a lot of problems with the operating system.

--------------------------------------

Lets check your computers security before you go and we have a little cleanup to do also:

Download Security Check by screen317 from HERE or HERE.

  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • If you get Unsupported operating system. Aborting now, just reboot and try again.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt.
  • Please Post the contents of that document.
  • Do Not Attach It!!!
