Safesear.ch has taken over my Chrome browser

Recommended Posts

Hello, hope you can help.  I apparently infected myself (and then my wife's computer - brilliant, I know) with Safesear.ch browser hijacker when uploading a free version of Ccleaner (which I apparently don't need on my newer computer) and have tried everything to get rid of it.  I uninstalled Ccleaner, "Avast" and bought the Norton Internet security, Purchased the Malwarebytes "Premium" and still nothing.  Unfortunately, I'm not that advanced in solving issues and am raising the flag in defeat.  Somewhere along the line, I also deleted "Atheros Office 2010" as my outlook is looking for it and errors out since I've been "working" on my computer.

From what I've read, Safesear.ch takes over the default browser regardless of how many times you reset.  It does not show up in my list of programs to 'uninstall' nor is it listed in my extensions in  Chrome to delete.  It is ONLY in Chrome and not Internet Explorer.  If you could be so kind as to assist this "least sophisticated" user in getting rid of this crap, I'd be in your debt!  Thanks!!

Please run a Quick Scan with Malwarebytes

For Malwarebytes ver: 1.75
Open up Malwarebytes > Settings Tab > Scanner Settings > Under action for PUP > Select: Show in Results List and Check for removal.
Please Update and run a Quick Scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, post the report.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.

For Malwarebytes 2.0, please run a Threat Scan
Click on Settings > Detection and Protection > Non-Malware Protection > PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program) detections > Make sure it's set to Treat detections as malware
Same for PUM (Potentially Unwanted Modifications)
Quarantine all that's found
Post the log

Then......

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST) and save it to a folder.

I'm not familiar with that, I would just do a Google search and see what you find.
Be careful of what you download!

Hi again, will just need instructions to remove all the "stuff" that was added on...thanks again.

bwebb7v.jpgDownload Delfix from here and save it to your desktop. (you may already have this)

  • Ensure Remove disinfection tools is checked.
  • Click the Run button.
  • Reboot

Any other programs or logs that are still remaining, you can manually delete. (right click.....Delete)
IE: RogueKiller.exe, RKreport.txt, RK_Quarantine folder, C:\FRST folder, FRST-OlderVersion folder, MBAR folder, etc....AdwCleaner > just run the program and click uninstall.

Note:
If you used FRST and can't delete the quarantine folder:
Download the fixlist.txt to the same folder as FRST.exe.
Run FRST.exe and click Fix only once and wait
That will delete the quarantine folder created by FRST.
The rest you can manually delete.

Any questions...please post back.
