What is a rootkit and why the option "scan for rootkits" is not activated by default recomentded settings?

I apologize,  I'm not familiar with these techniques, so my question may seem senseless. Thank you very much.

P.S. My system runs Windows 7, MBAM Pro (Premium) and Avira Internet Security.

To understand a rootkit, you can read about it HERE

Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit is cutting edge technology for detecting and removing the nastiest malicious rootkits. The reason its not enabled by default is because it has been know to cause some problems with some computers, especially those that have encryption on them, causing them to be unresponsive.  If you would like to enable it and test it on your system you can. If it causes no issues, then you can just leave it enabled.

Also if you do enable it, your scan times will increase in the time it takes to perform the scans because it will be scanning in more areas...

Thank you, Firefox. You are entirely clear. By the way, what about the tool "Chameleon"? I wonder if it is a good idea to run the program according to the instructions given in a YouTube video.

Thanks again.

Your welcome...

"Chameleon" is a tool that is used to run Malwarebytes if you already have a current infection that is preventing you from installing or running Malwarebytes. Also "Chameleon" is used with MBAM v2.0x to self protect Malwarebytes.

No need to run it if your can successfully open and run Malwarebytes...

Well, I don't think I need the help of chameleon. Μeanwhile, Ι ran the scanner with the "scan for rootkits" activated and I didn't notice any issue.

Also, I am thankful for the links - I need to study..
