I'm using Avast free but I turn off Web protection because I can use Adblock plus (and my own brains) for that.  I think most web scanners slow you down.  (Malwarebytes seems OK but much too sensitive and intrusive.)  I also use Winpatrol for HIPS and WFC firewall (excellent!)  It's just Windows Firewall, but adds notifications and prevents programs from adding their own rules.

I fix computers.  For slow computers I install Avast 6 and don't let it update the program, only the virus engine.  For newbies, I turn on the Web scanner.  I also install Adblock Plus for all browsers with the lowest settings.

To prevent popups ads, block AvastUI.exe and AvastSvc.exe in your firewall and set information notifications to popup for 0 seconds.  I don't install any of their other "tools," just the file and web sheild.  Maybe the I.M. and Email sheilds if a client uses email software instead of the web.  It doesn't work with Gmail though.

Bitdefender free is terrible in my opinion.  There are no settings to adjust it, and it has no ability to recover files from the virus vault.  It just steals your files.

AVG is decent. Don't let it automatically update the program (it insists on installing its browser toolbar and other stuff.)  Just manually reinstall the new version over the old version by downloading it periodically.  AVG 10 (2011) is also a good option for slow computers (and has no toolbars!)

Avira used to be good but the popup ads are much too intrusive now.

Panda is OK but I've fixed 2 computers where it didn't detect an FBI ransomeware virus.  I hesitate to recommend it to my clients now.

Microsoft security essentials is not great.  Few options.  Slows your computer down.  Doesn't show its status in the tray, and its difficult to disable temporarily.  To exclude detected files you have to quarantine them first and then get them out of the vault.  This could corrupt sensitive files.  However, it's my third choice becuse it's never intrusive and it has good detection ratings.
