MBAM 2.0 Premium Conflict with IOBit Malware Fighter

Recommended Posts

Since upgrading MBAM from 1.75 Pro to 2.0 Premium, my machine has been virtually unusable due to high CPU usage generated by MBAM services.

A common example for thread CPU usages is below

35% mbam.exe
20% mbamscheduler.exe
35 % mbamservice.exe

this is not while a scan was running. Most of the time, mbamservice.exe showed a usage in the range of 55% to 30%. Scans took a tremendous amount of time, Hyper scan about 25 minutes, custom scan with rootkit scan over 7 hours.

The initial install was in place over the old version. MBAM settings didn't affect the usage. This was then uninstalled using Revo Uninstaller, and mbam-clean-2.0.2.0 all run using msconfig to disable all non Microsoft software drivers and start ups. Reinstalling didn't correct the issue.

I have eventually established the issue is caused by IOBit Malware Fighter Free 2.3. More specifically the protect feature. With Malware Fighter installed and the IMFsrv.exe service running, there is no issue. Start Malware Fighter, and the system grinds to a halt. Reducing the protection level reduces the impact to a degree, but doesn't eliminate it, and specific files cannot be excluded.

I hope this helps others, and would suggest it is added to an appropriate stickied thread that can be easily found.

Use one or the other.  Choose.

IObit's business model includes plagiarism.  IObit was caught plagiarizing the MBAM signature database.

One should NOT support a company that includes plagiarism in their business model.

Hi Ron,

Sorry for not being clearer, I wasn't requesting support on the conflict, what I was suggesting was that the conflict was officially noted by yourselves in the forums and a recommendation to uninstall Malware Fighter.

I searched the forums when I had the issue, but found no mention flagging the incompatibility. If someone else has the same issue, it could really put them off MBAM, which would be a real shame. Ideally, if the installer checked for Malware Fighter and recommended uninstalling it before proceeding with installing MBAM 2.

I know some users install something, and if it doesn't work, they don't persevere, they just uninstall it and may not use the company again.

You're welcome Ron,

I know some installers check for incompatible software already installed, I was just thinking of the easiest way to reach your less techincal users. Fortunately I identified the problem before anyone complained, as MBAM is on my recommended list, and IOBit software used to be. The only reason I'd continued with Malware Fighter was for its registry monitoring for system changes. Their software certainly is a great example of how not to treat your free software customers by trying to foist additonal products on them by less overt means.
