New Malwarebytes 2.00.0.1000 found Trojan.fakeAV

Recommended Posts

On 4/1/14 I just downloaded the new interface of Malwarebytes and did an update and scan. It found this trojan.fakeAV and it shows in the AppData folder is where it resides and is called Toolbar AcceptRate.exe

So what is this and why did it come in from a antispyware company?

BTW. Just did three computers in the past 1/2 hour and the same thing came up on all three. I got the program from FileHippo.

And this ain't any April Fools Joke.

This means that it came in from Malwarebytes.

EDIT: Thanks, Firefox!

Can you please provide the exact specific link you clicked on to get this from FileHippo as well as zip and attach the downloaded file.  There is certainly no toolbar at all included in any of our products.

We can certainly help you clean the computers if you need help, just let us know.

Tried several times to paste into this post but it will not paste. I even put it into Word and copy and paste and it will not show up here. Does in other websites though. Anyhow from FileHippo I just click on Latest Version 16.71 MB and it shows up as. Sorry can't paste the name of it. Why doesn't this website let you paste? The name of the file is mbam-setup-2.0.0.1000.exe ( I had to type this out manually)

In order to attach a file you need to click on the More Reply Options button on the bottom right of the basic reply window.

From there you can access a Browse button where you can locate the file you wish to upload.  Then click on the Attach This File button and it will attach the file to your post.

The link I found on FileHippo is the correct version of the program and does not include any type of toolbar.

Main link:

File download link from green banner image Download Lastest Version (16.71MB)

Clicking that link starts the download of this file:

Checking the properties of that file you get the following:

post-2065-0-84034400-1396460469_thumb.jp

Again, there is no toolbar at all from the file I just downloaded.

Here is the VirusTotal scan link showing that 0/51 scanners found anything wrong with the file

https://www.virustotal.com/en/file/f55246ba432da00f1a6a4f335f18edcc30643c5304b2815f41d18a71f1fb72e5/analysis/1396460659/

Not sure what you really downloaded or thought you downloaded but if whatever it is installed a toolbar or anything else suspicious then it was not this same file.

If you need help now to clean your computer please let us know and we'll be more than happy to assist you.

Thank you
