Ransomware and how to make sure the pictures I can access are scanned for viruses.

Hi evryone...I'm new to this forum and it's my first post on a forum like this. I love learning more about security etc. I had my first computer build in 2005...it still works great. Well except the fact that it's not supported anymore by MS and now has a ransomware virus...other than that it's just way outdated. I really just want to see how I can copy all my favorites I've saved over the years in firefox and scan the pictures and videos I can still access even with the ransomware FBI screen still coming up. It's been a few months since i got the bug. I didn't even know ransomware was out there. I have MB, SAS & AVG 2014 free edition. I keep everything updated and scanned on a regular basis...usually every 1 or 2 days.  My old xp computer didn't have the latest SP3 installed. I had heard about problems with it? I just want to get my personal stuff off it and upgrade to W7. Below is the message i sent to a forum member and he suggested I post the thread on here. I appreciate any help. Thanks Mike

I recently got the FBI ransomeware on my outdated old xp build. I'm trying to save all the info and store it safely. I can start pc and access all pics & videos. Does this mean they aren't encrypted? The one thing I really want to save is all my book marks in my firefox profile...I save all kinds of good info from web pages I visit. There must be a thousand of bookmarks in my profile on firefox. I don't know any other way, but to try safe mode NW, but I think I already tried that procedure. I saved a good article on here about a rescue cd. I tried using hitmanpro on a usb, but my old MB doesn't support boot up with usb? It's a Asus P5GDC-V. Anyway, I'm mainly concerned about the security on my wife's new laptop...which I'm using all the time now. What are you using against ransomware and whats the best way to secure my privacy and documents? One more question...do you use sandboxie? Any comments about SBIE? Thank you...I've been using MB for almost 10 years

Hello minesripper and :welcome:

Sorry to hear that you've been infected with this.

I would suggest following the advice from the topic here Available Assistance for Possibly Infected Computers and having one of the Experts assist you with looking into your issue.

Hopefully you have backups of your data on an external drive or that this is not one of the real ones using encryption.

Best of luck on this
