This is part of the reason Microsoft is having so much issue with Windows 8 sales - they ignore customer complaints to the point that 3rd party vendors have to come up with cheesy cheap software to overcome the dumb decisions by Microsoft's misguided sense of direction on the OS.

Run Windows 8 Modern apps in a window on the desktop
Display and pin Modern apps on the taskbar
Explicitly close Modern apps by clicking its close button
Create desktop shortcuts for Modern apps
Access the Charms bar from an app’s window

ModernMix $4.99
Run Modern (Metro) apps in a window on your desktop with ModernMix

Wow --- disappointed to read this article as it seems that Microsoft even with a new CEO just does not get it.

Who really cares if Office 365 (yet another monthly paid subscription model) runs on iPad - that was 4 years ago and by now I'm sure most that really wanted to use it back then have already found an alternative solution.  But nooooo... Microsoft has to keep beating a dead horse and being a day late to the races.

Yes keep your Azure and improve it as it is viable for many users and companies

Yes keep your Contractor Services

Don't keep pushing Desktop and Server to act, work, look like a stupid phone.   Useless.

The Start button though annoying for many is certainly almost the least of concerns with navigation in Windows 8

Bottom line is both new and advanced users initially struggle with navigation - some catch on quicker than others but the point is it should not be hard to navigate in the first place.  Window 3.0 was pretty easy to navigate and each version forward typically made things easier.  In the case of Windows 8 not quite the same experience as the sales number show.

Bottom line, I already found an alternative for my iPad and it works great. If I get this Office for my iPad I can only view the docs unless I subscribe to the 365 service... I think not...

As for windows 8, its a big mistake.... I don't want it and I don't like it...

I didn't know about this app. Looks like it works well, for those who need (want ?) to run apps from the good ol' Desktop. That company makes Start8, which we know works well as a "make W8/W8.1 work almost like W7", a must for me anyway (I use Classic Shell though, which is similar). My main box is W7 though and I won't change that anytime soon.

This ModernMix has one caveat, as far as I'm concerned : using it would mean I like or need to use Metro apps, which I don't. I use W8.1 on my small 11" laptop because I got the cheap $15 W8 upgrade and wanted to benefit from a clean Windows install (custom upgrade), over the HP OEM Win7 I had ; that was riddled with bloatware and now I have a clean install which does make a difference. Don't use that laptop much, but with Classic Shell, it's almost Win7. Don't need to run any apps, just Desktop programs TYVM.

yeah ... and then bill M$ for the five bucks .

<_<

i firmly believe that no one should have to pay for a "solution" to a basic defect/shortcoming of a manufacturer .

that would be akin to the recent "defective ignition switch" that is in the news and pulling this :

"oh yeah , we admit we screwed up ... just bring your vehicle in and we'll fix you right up for a mere $599 ..."

it would certainly take a lot of crust to charge any corporation/business entity/private consumer for an upgrade or "swap-out" to a new os that is not fisher-price based .
