How Do I Get Rid Of An Unwanted Plug-In?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I recently used Java to fix a problem I had in a previous thread. I thought it best to start a new thread for this situation. I want to get rid of an unwanted plug-in from Java. I am including a screen shot of the item in question.

Hello John,

I see you hang out at Microsoft Community too (nods knowingly). I went to look at the message thread your link sent me to and read all 3  pages of it and not one person brought up the use of 'Hijack This'. I used to go to a support forum called 'Community Feedback' since back when they had been a part of the now defunct Microsoft Community discussion group system. CF has been closed for a while now. I really miss them (sniff)

They had a special forum dedicated to folks using the freeware 'Hijack This' where someone took the time to read the results of the scan of a machine's registry list and told folks exactly what to remove. It is worth the trouble because more often than not there would be one or two other entries that should not have been there.

I started a new thread about this at MC. The thread title- Is There Anybody Here Who Knows How To Use Hijack This? I tried to attach a link to that web page here but something went wrong and I had to rewrite this whole message.

I know better than to read the scan results myself because it's too, too easy to really screw up a machine's registry keys.

The best way is to fully remove Java and if at all possible don't use Java.

STEP 1
Use the FRST program to create a backup of your registry system state.

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system.
You can check here if you're not sure if your computer is 32-bit or 64-bit

  • Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press Scan button.
  • It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please copy and paste it to your reply.
  • The first time the tool is run, it also makes another log (Addition.txt). Please copy and paste it to your reply as well.

STEP 2
Go into your Control Panel, Add/Remove and uninstall ALL versions of Java.

STEP 3
Please download JavaRa-1.16 and save it to your computer.

  • Double click to open the zip file and then select all and choose Copy.
  • Create a new folder on your Desktop named RemoveJava and paste the files into this new folder.
  • Quit all browsers and other running applications.
  • Right-click on JavaRa.exe in RemoveJava folder and choose Run as administrator to start the program.
  • From the drop-down menu, choose English and click on Select.
  • JavaRa will open; click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
  • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location and post it in your next reply.

Then restart the computer even though not asked to.

That should remove all entries for Java and if you look in the IE settings it should no longer show.

 I had totally forgotten about JavaRa.  I always keep Java installed for development,

Good news is she already uninstalled JAVA, but it is a ghost plugin being reported in IE 11 that is actually not present.  JavaRa should take care of that in about 2 shakes of a lamb's tail.

As for HijackThis, well, the forums here for Malware removal assistance?  They originally started out as HijackThis forums.  Many of the experts in there know their way inside, outside, and upside down through HiJackThis and other malware removal tools.

Ron's got the right of it though - you should follow his steps.  The FRST will give him an idea if you should be directed over to the Malware removal Help forms or not.

Hello .

As a rule, I don't use Java but needed it temporarily to fix something else. I started on step 1 to use the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool. I downloaded it from my desktop only to find that it extracted multiple programs that did not appear to be for scanning purposes so I stopped right there and came back here. Btw, my machine is a 32 bit system.

Also,

I am now in the process of scanning my desktop with a MB full scan because one of the programs that got extracted to my machine has changed my homepage and I don't like that at all. Also, I had to remove about three different programs from my uninstall list!

Bottom line- I did not get an option to do a scan but received a few unwanted programs instead.

Can I just skip to using JavaRa?

It would seem you did not click on the correct link for FRST and at this time may have actually already installed something else.

This should be the direct download for it.  Make sure to include the trailing slash

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/farbar-recovery-scan-tool/dl/81/

Run it and post back the logs requested please.

No - I can promise you it was not the Farbar scanner.   That program is used thousands of times a week without an issue.

Unfortunately Bleepingcomputer uses ads to pay for their hosting costs and you had to have clicked on one of those ads instead of the blue download link for FRST.

Please use the link provided and it should download the FRST program for  you.  Don't click anything else, just wait a moment and the download should automatically start to download.

The link I provided download FRST.EXE which is a 32-bit version unless someone has accidentally linked the wrong program which I can check on.

Well at this point the computer is now infected with at least PUP (Possibly Unwanted Program) and in order to clean it up you need to post for assistance in the malware removal forum.

Please create a NEW topic in this forum below and then let me know when ready and I'll assist you in cleaning up the computer.

Thanks

I'm sorry but in order to actually do cleanup we need you to post in the other forum.  We don't allow malware removal from the other sub-forums like this one here.

Please make a new topic here:  https://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?showforum=7

Thank you again

@#17,

Hello Ron,

I was wondering how often you go to the malware forum. I did what you asked me to do and I realize I can't get any additional assistance here until you clear me over there.

Thanks,

Anne
