2.0 RFF: Restore user ability to disable silent PROGRAM updates

Recommended Posts

Hi:

Follow up to this earlier reply in another user's thread.

But I don't think I saw a direct reply from staff.

So, rather than further hijacking the OP's thread, I will re-post my question/request:

Is it actually the case that 2.00 users cannot separately disable silent PROGRAM updates if they use scheduled database auto-updates?

If so, I would respectfully request that this feature be restored ASAP.

Many advanced users prefer to have more control over their system, when it comes to updating programs.

There are many reasons for that.

Updates are sometime "broken" or buggy or unstable; there may be conflicts with other software on the user's system; program updates requiring a reboot might occur automatically at an inconvenient time (if context menu scanning option is enabled), when the user is engaged in some other computing activity; etc.

I have no problem with an option to make the program updates "invisible" or "transparent", letting them happen with minimal or no user action (as in 1.75).

And it would even be OK to have that as the default setting.

I understand the rationale for non-tech-savvy users.

But it is nearly a deal-breaker for me - I do not let ANY program update automatically and silently, not even trusty MBAM.

If I am wrong about this lack of functionality, please correct me. ;)

Thanks!

Hi:

No, I mean PROGRAM updates. :)

In 1.75 the user can disable automatic PROGRAM updates.

I (and many others) schedule automatic DATABASE updates, but have automatic/silent PROGRAM updates disabled.

Please refer to this thread.

It started out by the OP about saving logs, but it drifted off-topic to discuss auto/silent program updates.

If I understand the replies there from users who are running 2.00, there is NO WAY to turn off automatic PROGRAM updates in 2.00, if the user also has automatic database update checks enabled????

Thanks,

Hi, Phone Man:

Thanks, but I don't think that's exactly what I was asking. :)

In 1.75, the user can schedule automatic database updates (using the scheduler), but can still disable automatic/silent PROGRAM updates and even notifications for these (as shown in my screen shot above).

However, according to one of our forum experts who has been testing 2.00 since the early beta days:

In 2.00 there is no separate setting (that I can see) specifically dealing with program updates. https://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?showtopic=144831#entry807668

All I want to know is whether it is or is not possible to configure 2.00 the same way as 1.75: automatic, scheduled database updates ON, but automatic, silent program updates OFF?????

(A separate setting to notify when program updates are available -- similar to Windows Updates configuration -- would be fine, as long as it can be disabled from nagging.)

Sorry if I have not been able to explain my question clearly, or if I am confused by what John L Galt posted. :(

Thanks for your patience, expertise and assistance,

daledoc1

To clarify a little, when you update the database mbam will check for a program update. If there is a program update, it will be downloaded but not installed. A program update installation will not be silent and requires user input to complete successfully.

Screenshot in post #3 above....

Sorry, it was not showing before.

OK, so the fact that a program update requires user intervention negates the need to have a separate setting to  enable / disable checking for program updates?

I wouldn't say negates, but it would make it a little redundant.

Hi:

Thanks very much for the reply and clarification:

:) OK, well then I will reiterate my original RFF. :)

I want to be able to totally disable both aspects of automatic PROGRAM updating, just like 1.75.

Of course I want to be able to schedule frequent, automatic DATABASE update checks.

I do NOT want MBAM to automatically check for or download a PROGRAM update.

They need to be separate, so that advanced users can control when MBAM checks for OR downloads a PROGRAM update.

Just like in 1.xx.

I expect I am not the only "old" user who would like to restore this control.

Sure, leave it enabled by default for basic users, but please return for the rest of us the option to decide when the program update will be downloaded or installed.

Thanks!!!!!

Can't seem to find the thread, but I thought I had read someplace where the new 2.0 version was going to do program upgrades seamlessly?

I think there was mentioned that an update would not need a reboot to install if the context menu was disabled.

Add me to the list of supporters of this RFF.  I'd rather not automatically check for and download program updates.  At the very least, I'd like it to be able to be set to check for program updates and notify me, but daledoc1's RFF works just as well.
