Hey Guys,

Im sure you guys get asked this a lot but I wanted to share the specs im using. Im on a surface pro 2 (so minimal computing power) and right now im using windows 8.1. The two biggest startup apps im using is kaspersky AV and malwarebytes 2.00

Basicially, I got lost looking for ways to increase my system performance. Sometimes my computer is fine, but other times it gets laggy. I wouldnt say it starts up slow or crashes or anything like that, it just gets laggy at times. Ive done all the reccomendations (looked at the article start here if your computer is slow, and read the article about registry cleaners), but I want to know whats a quality app (unbloated) that I should be using or that I could opt to use to get my computer as speedy as possible without screwing up anything. (ive used tuneup and imho it is bloatware and its not what im looking for).

It would be nice if it also if it moinitored my system specs but I dont really care. I just want something that's quality and keeps this machine from slowing down over time and maintains it/optimizes it for best usage.

--battery life is another reason for this, as I do not get anywhere near the 9 hours they pitched me at best buy! I didnt expect to be I didnt expect to get say 3-4 hours only...

PS, if anyone is using malwarebytes 2.00    -- >  3 questions: 1) what is self-defense mode number 1. 2) Also do you notice that it takes a lot of computer resources to run it. I have 2 schedualed tasks and full protection activated but it just seems to lag my systems at times. 3) any settings I need to switch in kaspersky to get the most benefit of having both being run with a minimal system impact?

Thanks guys and sorry for the long post. It might help others too im sure. You guys are great and really know your stuff, that's why instead of searching online I come to you guys :)

Hey Guys,

Snip, snip...

Q1) Probably the most important benefits are the ability to defend against malware deleting, changing, renaming or moving Malwarebytes Anti-Malware components.

Q2) In an idle state, my own system's total i7 CPU usage is between 1 and 2 percent. As far as RAM usage, the database must be present in RAM to give your system the best possible real-time performance. Imagine the database only on your storage drive or worse - in the cloud.

Q3) On some occasions, exclusions must be entered in Kaspersky or MBAM or both. This seems less common now.

How much RAM was sold with your Surface Pro 2? Which Kaspersky product have you installed?

Thanks for getting back to me and so fast too! I believe I got the version with 8 gb of ram. and my prosessor is the I5. The Kaspersky product is internet security. It came with site blocker and such but I have those things disabled since MBAM has those in it. Should I activate self-defense or use the default settings?

I think that MBAM is running within the values you posted. Sometimes when it scans it jumps in cpu usage but I suppose that is normal. I also have it set to autostart when windows starts.

So, sorry to ask, but should I not consider using any optimization software on my machine?

Yes - you should avoid almost everything! Exception: Piriform's Free CCleaner is quite good for reclaiming drive storage space, but totally avoid using the registry fixing feature. When set to run with system start-up, you probably would never need to launch it otherwise.

Windows 8.1 will take care of the registry very well on its own, and your tablet's SSD does not require optimization.

KIS and 8GB of RAM is excellent.

Some Windows services might be stopped/altered, but these are very advanced techniques best left to experts. You do not want to brick your tablet.

Avoid downloading new/hyped applications/games you hear/read about. Snake oil sales are everywhere.

BTW, CWB and John gave you good advice in your previous thread.

Good luck! :)
