NEW 2.00 3-PC consumer license: "grace period" or not?

Recommended Posts

Hi, MBAM 2.00 team:

I am "good to go" with 6 lifetime licenses myself.

So, I am asking on behalf of product newcomers who will be buying new subscription licenses.

(I expect there will be more info about all of this when 2.00 launches officially.)

  • Will the clock on the 1-year subscription for NEW, consumer, 3-PC licenses for 2.00 start at the time of PURCHASE or at the TIME OF ACTIVATION?
  • If it is the latter, will the clock on all 3 activations start when the first install is activated?
  • Or will there be a "grace period"?
  • Will there be a different system for ONLINE purchases directly from MBAM store versus boxed CDs?
  • Related question: Will consumer subscription licensing renewal be an opt-out or an opt-in system?

Reason for asking:

  • KL -- for example -- currently has 2 kinds of time-limited licenses for their consumer products:
    • The clock for a "subscription" license (for 1, 3 or more PCs) purchased online via their store starts at the time of PURCHASE, even before the license code is entered into the program GUI.
      • If a user buys a subscription license renewal before his/her existing subscription expires, (s)he loses days.
      • There is no "grace period".
      • Automatic subscription renewal is a (cumbersome) opt-out process.
    • The clock for a "boxed", standalone version (of course) only starts upon ACTIVATION, not upon purchase.
      • However, even for this type of license, there is no "grace period", either: the clock starts for all multi-PC licenses when the FIRST install is activated.
      • Therefore, if a user wants to minimize lost days on the license for multiple rigs, (s)he must activate the license on all covered PCs as close together as possible.

( FWIW There seems to be related inquiry from a RESELLER >>HERE<<.)

Cheers,

Hi, John:

I'm betting on date of activation, otherwise why would the software need to record the date of activation?

I think we need to wait for the staff for the definitive answer, no? :)

From my own experience with other security software vendors, there are MANY ways to do this -- with and without "grace periods".

And standalone/boxed may well be different from online purchase.

Someone is bound to ask...

I was just trying to learn what the policy/procedure will be.

Thanks,

I don't have a complete answer for everything at this time but the following should answer most of the questions posted.

If purchased directly from Malwarebytes by an end user, the subscription starts on the Purchase date. For products purchased from a reseller, including boxed software sold at retail, the subscription period begins on license Activation. In all cases, this is a single license for up to 3 PCs; and so the license (by definition) starts all at once.

Hi:

Thanks for the information - it is much as I expected.  It makes sense, I think. :D

But I am still a bit confused about one item...

Does this include the cleverbridge reseller portal?

Reseller purchases will not start until the user activates.  If you find otherwise please do let us know.

I am just a bit confused:  When one "purchases directly from Malwarebytes" isn't that transaction handled by the "reseller", cleverbridge?
So, if I understand it correctly: even though the transaction is processed via the cleverbridge "reseller", such a purchase from MBAM by an end user would count as a "direct" purchase and the license subscription for all 3 PCs would start on the day of purchase?

IOW, cleverbridge isn't really a "reseller" in the sense that it's being used for OTHER resellers (e.g. NewEgg, Amazon, etc etc etc)?

That's how KL does it for their subscription licenses.
The only down side for the customer is that there is no way to avoid losing days on one's subscription as part of the renewal process.
Otherwise, one would have to wait until the old subscription had completely expired before renewing.

I guess there are 364 days left to sort that out for MBAM 2.00. :)
And it doesn't affect me directly, since I have 6 lifetime licenses.... ;)
I was just curious, on behalf of newcomers.

Cheers,

No cleverbridge is not a reseller they manage the sales transaction.  A reseller is someone that has signed up with us to resell the product and typically will purchase x amount of licenses up front and then those are sold over time to their customers.  When you click the link from our own website and go to purchase then you're purchasing directly from us and cleverbridge simply manages the financial transaction for us at this time.

Hi guys,

Answer to daledoc1's original question, straight from our Product Management team:

Buys any version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Premium ONLINE after MBAM 2.0 release
Users get a SINGLE 1-Year Subscription License for up to THREE (3) PCs. The license is tied to a renewable, annual subscription. The Subscription Start Date begins when users enter their license in MBAM 2.0 on the FIRST PC. MBAM 2.0 reminds users 30 days prior to, and during a small grace period after, the Subscription End Date about need to renew the license. Before the Subscription End Date, users have to purchase another license from Malwarebytes or affiliate website to continue using Premium features. Cleverbridge will send renewal notifications 30 days before the initial Purchase Date, but users have until the Subscription End Date to enter the new license.

Buys any version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Premium at RETAIL after MBAM 2.0 release
Users get a SINGLE 1-Year Subscription License for up to THREE (3) PCs. The license is tied to a renewable, annual subscription. The Subscription Start Date begins when users enter their license in MBAM 2.0 on the FIRST PC. MBAM 2.0 also starts reminding users 30 days prior to, and a small grace period after, the Subscription End Date about need to renew the license. Before the Subscription End Date, users either have to buy another box and enter the license OR purchase a license from Malwarebytes or affiliate website to continue using Premium features.

Please let me know if you guys have any further questions. Thanks!

Thanks very much, celee.

That all makes perfect sense.

The only unexpected tidbit is the fact that the clock on an online, direct purchase starts with 1st activation, rather than at the time of purchase.

So: Would the Premium 2.00 license purchased online ever expire, if it were not used to activate on any PC?

Or would it be good "indefinitely" if the user - for some reason - did not activate it soon after purchase (analogous to a purchased-but-unused boxed CD)?

And yes, this was my question #5 above: :)

Next important question. Will it auto-bill when due or just inform and expire if not renewed?

For comparison, subscription licenses for KL products are sold under an auto-renewal agreement.

The customer has to execute a (somewhat cumbersome) process after purchase in order to opt-out of the auto-renewal.

Thanks!

Next important question. Will it auto-bill when due or just inform and expire if not renewed?

If you purchased MBAM Premium from our shopping cart/Cleverbridge, you'll be informed of expiring license and auto-billed.

If you purchase MBAM Premium in a box or from retailer, you'll be informed of an expiring license but not auto-billed. You'll either need to purchase another yearly license from us or purchase another boxed copy when the license expires.

So: Would the Premium 2.00 license purchased online ever expire, if it were not used to activate on any PC?

Or would it be good "indefinitely" if the user - for some reason - did not activate it soon after purchase (analogous to a purchased-but-unused boxed CD)?

In this scenario, the Premium license will never expire. If you purchased the license from our shopping cart, however, you'll get a 30-day reminder from Cleverbridge from the original date of purchase, which can be ignored since you've never activated your license.

Hope that clears things up. Please let me know if you have any additional questions. :)

Thanks!
