This morning's scan results showed 701 suspicious items. SInce I would have had to check each box individually, I checked a few, hit remove and closed the program. After learning how to change the settings to automatically check every item found, I thought the morning's results would reappear when I did another scan this evening. They did not. What happened to them, where did they go, do I have to worry about them, etc. ? Any help would be appreciated

Hello and welcome, Rabid_Jackal:

Why did unchecked items detected in a scan "disappear"?
Not sure about that one -- if they were not removed, then one might expect they would show up again on the next scan.

If you want, please post the scan log as an attachment to your next reply for the staff to review.

With so many detections, it sounds as if at least some of them might have been PUPs.
PUP = Potentially Unwanted Program
This KB topic explains what they are AND how to decide whether to delete them or keep/ignore them: What are the 'PUP' detections, are they threats and should they be deleted?
The default action for PUP detections is 'Show in results list and do not check for removal."

There are 2 methods for removing multiple PUPs:

1. If you want Malwarebytes Anti-Malware to remove these PUP detections reported after a scan, each item must be checked.

  • To do so quickly, you can highlight one of the detections by left clicking on it.
  • Then, right click on the highlighted detection, and select 'Check All Items'.
  • Next, click 'Remove Selected'. That should address the PUP entries.

2. If you want to edit the way PUP detections are reported and handled, you can follow the steps in this illustrated blog post: http://blog.malwarebytes.org/news/2013/09/selecting-all-pups/

(If you want to keep/ignore the PUP detections, because they are familiar to you and you use them, you can add them to the Ignore List.)

>>>Having said all that, if you're not sure what to keep/ignore and what to remove/quarantine, or if you are having other trouble with possible infection, then I would suggest that you please follow the advice in this pinned topic: Available Assistance For Possibly Infected Computers.
A malware analyst will guide you through the scanning and cleanup process.

Thanks,

Well, I'm just a Neanderthal, myself. :)

If you can't find the logs in the wood pile, they might be here:

MBAM scan logs are saved to the following locations:
-- XP: C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-yyyy-mm-dd
-- Vista, Windows 7, 8+: C:\ProgramData\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-yyyy-mm-dd

It's generally safe to let MBAM remove everything it finds.

In any event, if you need help with reviewing the scan results, especially in terms of what to keep and what to remove, it might be best to start here: Available Assistance for Possibly Infected Computers

The work to detect and clean PUPs, adware, malware & other pests requires the use of scanners and tools that aren't permitted in this particular area of the forum.

One of the malware experts will assist you for free -- it will only cost a bit of your time.

Thanks!
