I have heard it rumoured that the Malwarebytes licence is changing from lifetime to annual subscription.

Is it?

It would be an awful shame.

You probably read something regarding Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (MBAM). The following is the official word for MBAM:

However, you have originally posted in a Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit sub-forum (MBAE) where Pedro (pbust) is a very authoritative source for this product.

I'm very excited to be able to tell you that in a few months, we'll be launching Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 2.0 with a completely redesigned and easier to use UI and massive engine improvements under the hood.

We'll also be moving to a subscription licensing model, $24.95 per year. As more and more people have come to rely on us for malware protection and cleanup, our costs in bandwidth, hosting fees, infrastructure, salaries of our researchers, QA department, and more have grown immensely. Though our company is about more than just making money, we are a company and we do have to make money to pay our staff to continue doing what they love, which is fighting malware. The subscription model will help us to be sustainable for the future while staying true to our roots that we will always make malware cleanup free for everyone.

We will continue to honor existing lifetime licenses, meaning any users that already have a lifetime license for 1.x will continue to have a lifetime license for 2.x. We'll be offering a few thousand more lifetime licenses during launch as well. On top of all of that, new subscription licenses will be valid for 3 PCs, not just 1.

We could have gone other routes to make our business more financially sustainable, like adding toolbars or advertisements like many other security products have, but that's not the company we are. We believe that products should be nag-free and cleanup shouldn't cost our users a dime, and we're going to stay true to that.

I was wondering what thoughts you may have on this idea and would truly appreciate your input.

Best regards,

Marcin

Hi, Geranium:

Until 1PW and the others return....

The current situation is the same.

Version 2.00 is still in beta -- we will need to wait for an official announcement regarding the date of the public release of the final 2.00.

Licensing situation is the same: existing, 1-computer, consumer, lifetime licenses for 1.xx will be migrated to lifetime, 1-computer licenses for 2.00.  Each license will remain transferable from one PC to another, but not to another user (same as always).

This recent post contains a bit more detail about how the planned migration from licensed, PRO 1.xx to licensed Premium 2.00 will take place for consumers.

There is no need to worry -- if you have valid consumer licenses with version 1.xx, they will stay that way for the upgrade, when it happens.

>>New licenses for version 2.00 will cover 3 computers each, but will be based on a renewing subscription model.  So, if you want lifetime licenses for any other personal computers not currently running MBAM PRO, it would be a good idea to buy them now, while they are still available.

  • 3 weeks later...

Have they already changed?

An acquaintance has been unable to purchase a lifetime licence and the site offered only an annual subscription.

Yes they have already changed... you may try amazon and get a lifetime license before supplies run out...

If you currently have a lifetime single use license, then it will remain a lifetime single use license, so your existing license will remain in effect.

From now on any new license bought will be a subscription license good for 1 year and can be used on 3 computers.

There may still be some lifetime licenses out there that you can buy until supply runs out of the stock that was out there, but you need to go buy them as soon as you can because once they are sold out that's if for lifetime licenses.

Not sure I understand what your saying....

However, the new version 2.0x is not being pushed out yet using the updater in version 1.7x but soon will start getting pushed out. You can download the new version now and install right over the existing version and it will upgrade it.

Any version below 2.0 lifetime license will be honored and will allow you to activate a 2.0x version as a 1 user lifetime license.

HTH...
