Pirated?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

This morning I had to update my mother's Trend Micro. She insists on using it. Needless to say, I had to uninstall a bunch of apps to install their software and THEN re-install everything.  WHen I went to Malwarebytes.org and downloaded the "free" version, installed it and re-booted, then ran it... it tells me it's pirated. I've found topics on pirated software on this forum none seem to apply to me unless I am overlooking something.

So, here are my questions:

1. I downloaded the free version from your site. WHy is it telling me it's pirated?

2. I would prefer to use the "free" version of Malwarebytes on her pc. How do I change it to use the free version?

Thank you for any assistance.

Hello and :welcome: , zeid:

Until staff arrives, that sounds highly abnormal.

>>>>> Are you talking about the TM being "pirated" or the MBAM being "pirated"???
>>>>>What program or application is telling you that it is "pirated"?
>>>>>From exactly which of the mirror sites did you download the installer?

>>>>>Is the computer in question infected or suspected of being infected?

>>I will explain how to revert to MBAM Free after we get a bit more info about what's going on.

Thanks,

Hello again,

This is the exact url I went to: http://www.malwarebytes.org/

I chose Free Version Download and downloaded it from: http://www.malwarebytes.org/mwb-download/

It downloaded the executable onto the desktop.

I installed it.

Unfortunately, I cannot grab a screenshot of it -I'm not at her house right now,   Upon doing a search on Google Images, this is exactly what popped up:

So, now the questions are:

1. Was Malwarebytes site compromised and is it a bad download and executable?

2. Is this just a marketing tool to try and get people to buy? In otherwords, why is it telling me it's pirated?

3. If the answer is #2. and it's a clean copy, how do I change it to use the FREE version?

No Malwarebytes does not use any marketing tools to get you to buy there product. There will always be a free version and they will always help you remove malware for free....

To attach an image, click on the More Reply Options at the bottom of the window your typing in to get the options to upload/attach an image.

EDIT: I will attaché the image your talking about here for others to see without having to go to another site....

If you could also provide the logs below, it could help us determine what's going on....

Please run the following scanner and send back the logs.

Download DDS from one of the locations below and save to your Desktop
dds.scr
dds.com

Temporarily disable any script blocker if your Anti-Virus/Anti-Malware has it.
How To Temporarily Disable Your Anti-virus, Firewall And Anti-malware Programs

Once downloaded you can disconnect from the Internet and disable your Ant-Virus temporarily if needed.
Then double click dds.scr or dds.com to run the tool.
Click the Run button if prompted with an Open File - Security Warning dialog box.
A black DOS console should open and run for a moment.

  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
  • DDS.txt
  • Attach.txt
  • Save both reports to your desktop
  • Please include the following logs in your next reply "as an attachment": DDS.txt and Attach.txt
You can ignore the note about zipping the Attach.txt file

The picture you posted from the link I provided to the jpeg is indeed the message I get. I did see this message. However, it does not apply to me. The "bamboozled" end user wanted to purchase the product, I am not interested in purchasing the product. I am interested in using the "free" version only.

So, is this a normal pop up after the install and running the executable?

Thanks for your rapid responses! :)

OK, here is what you can try....

  • Please download mbam-clean.exe from here to your desktop and save it.
  • Please close all open applications and temporarily shutdown your antivirus to avoid any conflicts when running the tool.
  • Locate the file mbam-clean.exe and double-click to run it and follow the onscreen prompts.
  • It will ask to restart your computer, please allow it to do so very important
  • After the computer restarts, ensure that your antivirus is enabled and download the latest version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Now close all open applications including your browser and again temporarily disable your antivirus as before and launch the Malwarebytes installer you just downloaded.
  • Please make sure to uncheck the Trial checkmark near the end of the installation.
  • Please make sure you check for updates at the end of the installation as well.

That will/should revert you back to the FREE version, and since you do not wish to purchase it, then no need to activate it.
