I've just read about, thought about, installed, and tested MBAE, which certainly seems like a great idea.

 

I can't help but wonder if MBAE (plus anti-virus) would provide protection enough so that Windows XP will be safe to use after Microsoft drops support... hmmmmmm...

It will certainly help but is not a replacement for security patches provided by the vendor. There will always be a higher risk of potential infection once security updates are discontinued by Microsoft. Creating an Image of your system now and backing up all your data to an external drive can go a long way in being able to easily recover if you were to become infected to a point where it could not be cleaned.
