Hello MB forum.  I just ran TFC on my machine and received a BSOD.  I ran it again and got the same thing.  I now have 6 files on my desktop that otherwise would be hidden.  They look like temp .docx files.  There is also a file named desktop.ini.  I don't suspect malware, but have included a MB quick scan log.  I also included the two BSOD "reports".  I would like to get rid of the new files on the desktop, but have decided to hold off.  This is a separate issue with a separate computer than the topic under malware removal.  Thanks in advance for any help.

docx files are Microsoft Word files and are normal to see.  By default Microsoft does not show hidden files or extensions.

Please see the following topic on how to show/hide extensions and hidden files.  Myself though I really like to see extensions to know for sure what files are what.

How to see hidden files in Windows

TFC is a 3rd party utility that could be conflicting with your antivirus or other security software and causing that or there could be some type of hidden process in a temporary location that it's trying to remove that is locked in memory.

Please stay with your topic in the malware removal forum and you can get assistance there for it.

Thanks

Well as I said TFC is a temporary file cleaner and it could have hit something it could not remove or maybe your antivirus stopped it.

Seeing extensions for files (IMHO) is a good thing but you can follow that link on how to not show them if you like.

If you're having other issues or concerns with your computer and not this other one then once we're done you can open a new topic and we can look at this one too.

  • 2 years later...

I have seen the BSOD on Windows 10 and tried something the other day on a friends computer.

I right clicked  TFC.EXE and changed its compatibility to act like windows 7.  It worked, try it it might work

as I have found it deletes much more "stuff" than the other suggestion ATF cleaner.
